SAP Digital Manufacturing supports routings with a relaxed flow, where SFCs with quantity > 1 can have individual quantities in work at multiple operation activities simultaneously.

As shown below, a SFC with quantity '5' can have individual quantities 'In Work' in multiple Operation Activities at the same time, when relaxed flow is turned on in the routing.

* You can learn more about how to handle SFCs with quantity > 1 in SAP Digital Manufacturing PODs at: Handling SFCs with Lot Size > 1 in SAP Digital Manufacturing.

When relaxed flow is off in the routing, system would not allow and throw an error if you try to start an individual SFC quantity in the next operation activity, without completing the whole SFC quantity in the previous operation activity, as shown below.

To enable relaxed flow, just set 'Relaxed Flow' to 'Yes' in Manage Routings/Recipes app.

'Relaxed Flow' flag is enriched from Master Routings to Order-Specific Routings, which means that if you enable it in a master routing downloaded from ERP, all order-specific routings created afterwards during Order Download from ERP will inherit the same setting, see Enrichment of Order-Specific Objects for more details.

You can also enable 'relaxed flow' setting at both master routing (LOIROU04) and production order (LOIPRO05 V2) levels via Custom XSLT rules in the Manage Integration Workflows app, see:

For Master Recipes, and consequently Order-Specific Recipes, relaxed flow is enabled by default, as Order POD by design works in a relaxed flow way for process orders.

Restrictions

Routings with a relaxed flow have a number of restrictions, including:
  • You can only use operation activities, as well as scrap and done actions.
  • You can't use duplicate operation activities as it's impossible for the system to determine the correct activity when the quantity is in queue at multiple places in the routing with the same operation activity in the POD.
  • You can't use embedded or nested routings as an SFC has to traverse multiple routings.
  • The routing activity option Queue Decision doesn't support the Next Operator option. Since this option places the entire quantity in queue at multiple places in the routing, you can't use it in routings with a relaxed flow.
  • Any-order groups and simultaneous groups aren't supported in the POD.
  • Merging, relabeling, and serializing of SFCs isn't supported.
  • Set SFC Quantity API doesn't provide support when you're using a relaxed flow routing.
