There has been a long wait from many SAP S/4HANA Cloud customers for the availability of SAP Transportation Management’s planning feature embedded in cloud. In this blog post I will talk about the basic functionalities available in S4HCE and this feature is made available from S4HCE 2108 release.

Planning is one of the important activities in the Transportation Management.

In SAP S/4HANA Cloud, we have only one flavor of the planning i.e., Manual Planning.  As the name suggests Manual Planning allows you to manually create or change a transportation plan i.e choose a vehicle type. However, the selection of the actual or exact resource is supposed to be executed by the external carriers/subcontractor.

To create a transportation plan, you assign requirement documents, for example freight units, to capacities, for example vehicle resources types. The system creates capacity documents, for example freight orders, which you can process further.

Based on the selection criteria, the manual planning is done in the “Transportation Cockpit”.

Starting from SAP S/4HANA Cloud 2108 release, a new role called Dispatcher is introduced which is used by the planner to login to the S4HCE system and plan the transportation activities. The SAP Fiori app “Transportation Cockpit” is introduced to perform manual planning.

In my example, have taken Outbound scenario where the sales representative has received an order for 100 chocolates boxes to be delivered to a customer on a specific date. A transportation demand (Freight Unit) is created. Now, planner needs to plan the transportation demand based on the available vehicle type. We shall see, how we can perform Manual Planning in SAP S/4HANA Cloud.

Steps to perform the Manual Planning in SAP S/4HANA Cloud.

Planner Login to the SAP Firoi launch pad using the role “dispatcher”.

In the “Dispatching” group and planner access the app “Transportation Cockpit”.

A “Transportation Cockpit: Selection Criteria” screen is displayed where he needs to maintain the selection criteria.

In the Selection Criteria he enters the following:

  • Under “Freight Unit Stages” from the drop down selects Freight Unit, enters the created Freight Unit.

  • Under “Vehicle Type”, enters the vehicle resource type which is required.

  • Clicks Continue

A “Transportation Cockpit” screen is displayed.

On the Transportation Cockpit, planner will see the four sections Freight Unit Stages, Trucks, Road Freight Orders, Road Freight Order Hierarchy. Under Freight Unit Stages, all the Freight Units selected in section criteria also under Trucks, the selected vehicle type.

Planner selects the Freight Units and the Truck and clicks button “Assign Selected Items”.

A Freight Order with $1 gets created under the section “Road Freight Orders”.

Planner saves the Freight Order by clicking save.

Summary:

Now, you should be able to understand how planner can perform manual planning on SAP S/4HANA Cloud 2108 and so on systems.

Note:

In S/4HANA Cloud for the Transportation Planning is only supported for external carriers/subcontractors and not supported for In-house fleet.

It is not possible to represent an exact resource and to assign freight orders to exact vehicle resources in S/4HANA Cloud. Also, there is no check to verify if multiple freight orders are assigned to the same truck resource.
