As a Maintenance engineer, I strongly believe that, In all the situations, checklist assessment might have prevented equipment failures and potential impact on operations if one had done proper checklist assessment as part of the maintenance program, which was deemed necessary at certain point of time.
SAP ASPM, which is part of Intelligent Asset Management suite has had "Checklist Assessment" feature, which can be used to assess equipment health factor throughout Asset Life Cycle.
In this blog, I would like to walk you through the "Simple Checklist Assessment".
What is Checklist?
It is a simple and standardized steps/activities developed for certain maintenance tasks to get the right things in the first place.
Why would we need Checklist Assessment for Equipment?
From maintenance angle, the unplanned downtime has the biggest impact on the organizational services.
The checklist assessment helps maintenance team to detect the possible potential issues very early which could disrupt operations and drives up the overhead cost.
As part of Asset Strategy and Performance Management, SAP provides two types of checklists, one is Advanced Checklist and the other one is Simple Checklist.
Before we get into details, let me brief you about the difference between Advanced Checklist and Simple Checklist.
Advanced Checklist:
The Advanced Checklist is exclusively designed to meet the requirements for the consequence evaluation in RCM Assessment(Reliability Centered Maintenance).It aids to record the answers to the questions as per the RCM decision tree to understand each failure mode and related consequences in consequence evaluation process.
Simple Checklist:
The simple checklist is to assess the condition of the equipment at regular intervals, but having said that, it also can be used for Installation/ Commissioning and Disposal assessments when maintenance team upgrading machinery to meet the demands.
SAP has designed the "Simple Checklist" in such a way that, it meets the overall equipment assessment strategy to analyze the current condition and helps maintenance team in managing the reliability of the equipment.
We knew that, poor installation of equipment results in high maintenance cost and we should always ensure that equipment is safe to operate and meeting the design requirements...
For Instance, I consider Installation of Air Compressor for simple checklist assessment and below sections are considered in this blog,
- Ventilation
- Air Intake
- Cooling Water
- Electrical System
To execute simple checklist assessment, we have to have below master data
- Equipment/Functional Location/Models/Systems
- Assessment Attributes viz: Impacts/Sections ; Scales/Answers ; Dimensions/Questions
- Result Indicators (For each of the section or Overall)
The result indicator in this process is cherry on top of the cake and it allows us to store the overall checklist assessment result into the Indicators.
Let us get started,
Assessment attributes maintain certain default data as per organizational requirement and are as follows,
- Impact / Section : Create the required impact areas for Air Compressor Installation, viz: Ventilation, Air Intake, Cooling Water System and Electrical System etc.,
- Scale / Answer : We need to have a scale matrix to evaluate each Dimension/Question
- Dimension / Question : We need to develop the questionnaire to evaluate the state of readiness factor for the equipment installation with respect to envisaged impact areas. The questionnaire should be very detailed, below screen shots are just to have an understanding about the questionnaire pattern.
- Result Indicator : This feature allows us to store both overall result and section result into indicators.
Considerations for overall result indicator:
a) Only one indicator from each template allowed.
b) Only numeric and numeric flexible data type of indicators allowed.
Considerations for section result indicator:
a) Only one indicator from each template allowed.
b) Multiple Indicators can be assigned only if the indicators belong to different template.
c) Only numeric and numeric flexible data type of indicators allowed.
Note: We must select a different indicator to store the scores for overall result indicator and section result indicators. If we use same indicator for both, the score value will not be updated.
- Simple Checklist Assessment Template : The assessment template is to assess equipment/model/system by consolidating the questionnaire and answers and relevant information within the template and updates the score into result indicator.
As part of the assessment template creation process, one has to assign the relevant templates, for example if the simple checklist assessment is for Equipment, assign the equipment template
and relevant Impacts/sections
and assign the result indicator
and finally assign the thresholds for the assessment template.
Let us use the above template and create "Assessment" for an Air Compressor,
- Simple Checklist Assessment : Create an assessment and execute the questionnaire for each of the impact areas
Simple Checklist Assessment for Installation
Perform the checks for each of the sections by selecting ranking scale
Once we "complete" the assessment for all the impact areas, publish the assessment and system calculates the score. We can see the result for both over all and for each of the section.
The equipment master data gets updated with the result as per the assignment of the result indicators. I have chosen "overall result indicator" for this assessment, so the overall result score got updated in the master.
