Variant configuration with SRM

Hi,

I am using plan driven standard scenario in SRM 7.

If my MM purchase requisition contains a variant configuration article, shopping cart is not created.

SAP has confirmed that variant configuration functionality is not supported in SRM.

What would be the solution to create a shopping cart ? enhance SRM and create texts in line item level with characteristics values ? Create a service catalog equivalent to configuration ?
