Suppress from document form page is selected as "Yes"

As per the Administration Fundamentals SAP guide,

In the Custom field segmented picklist,

when Suppress from document form page is enabled, the first segment is not displayed in the user interface and is not stored in the database. The value of the first segment will only be used to filter the second segment, which will appear as the first segment in the user interface, and to allow uploading of the mapping data.

Could you please help me understand that if the 1st segment is not displayed in the UI, from where (source) will the value of the 1st segment be fetched to be used to filter the second segment?

The value is sourced from the native field referenced in the first segment of the pick list. This value must still exist in the pick list. After the user selects or inputs the native field, the SAP Fieldglass application will look up the native field (e.g. cost center) value in the pick list to determine the values to present to the user in the subsequent segment(s) of the pick list. This type of segmented pick list is typically used with the Segmented Object Detail functionality, but it can be used independently in a standard custom field.
