Hi Enriques,
It is very much possible. But if you use ECC 6.0 (Ehp 4.0) with SRM 7.0 you can leverage a lot of features which you will not be able to use in case you go ahead with ECC 5.0.
Examples of features : New SOA based architecture, Service Procurement, Central Contracts etc.
