Diff bet Process Controlled workflow and Application Controlled workflow in SRM 7.0

Dear All,

Can you please let me know the difference between Process Controlled Workflow and Application Controlled Workflow in SRM 7.0. I have got the information that remove approver does not work for application controlled workflow in SRM 7.0. I want to understand it fundamentally. I am new in SRM workflow.
