When managing external workers like freelancers and independent contractors, our customers know that rates can get extremely complicated. For one role, the amount of rate objects or inputs used to calculate rates can increase almost exponentially based on the number of suppliers, pay rates and location-specific rules. Rates can change by the hour based on state and country regulations according to the number of hours worked, when they are worked, who supplied that worker, etc. In other words, the amount of rate objects that our customers need to manage can be massive to ensure billing is accurate and compliant. It can make your head spin.

To handle that growing complexity, SAP Fieldglass Contingent Workforce Management solution has always had the most-powerful rate functionality. You can do almost anything using the rates functionality with SAP Fieldglass. Admittedly, however, it’s not been the easiest to use.

The SAP Fieldglass product team has been working hard to address this issue. As of November 2021, SAP Fieldglass has greatly-improved the user experience for calculating rates. Even better, all the powerful functionality is still there.

A lookup table does the heavy-lifting so our customers don’t have to.

Rates that are based on many, many conditions now can be managed with an easy-to-use lookup table. The lookup table incorporates many conditions such as role, location, and suppliers. Additionally, the lookup includes options for defining additional rate card criteria as well as a combination of lookups and simple admin objects. Plus, the new structure accommodates pay rate versus bill rate and markup versus coefficient driven. And importantly, it supports all the various worker premiums for overtime, unit pay, and other benefits such as pensions.

In the example below, you can see that the lookup table reduces the number of rate objects from 162 (left) down to just five (right).

SAP Fieldglass has already helped one very large and complex customer, reducing their 2.3 million rate objects down to a much-more manageable 1,000 rate objects. It’s readily available to new customers, and existing customers can look forward to their migration to this new, easier structure in 2022.

There is no doubt that this development has been a big step forward in alleviating the burden of managing rates. But it’s just the beginning. Helping our customers manage rates will continue to get better and better across SAP Fieldglass solutions.
