Huge change is coming this year and this blog post is the beginning of multiple pieces to help explain and describe this evolution. We wanted to start off with basically a blunt and direct to the point piece to explain that major evolution and change is happening, sneaky on our part because we want your attention as we describe this more and more going forward!

What is SAP InnoJam? SAP InnoJam was formally started in 2010 as the SAP Innovation Weekend and was the combination of the SAP Hackers' Night, BPX Process Design Slam and the BOBJ Insight Night which attracted a total of 200+ attendees in their final year in 2009. The idea was to combine the technical experts with the dashboarding wizards and the business know how to create an innovative solution using SAP technology in a single weekend.

What is DemoJam at SAP TechEd? DemoJam was originally designed to give employees and opportunity in a large customer facing event to showcase their innovative ideas on SAP NetWeaver and over the past 10 years grew to include partners and customers showcasing their own innovations. It was billed as the "American Idol for Geeks" by industry analysts and over the past couple of years has included the winning team from the SAP InnoJam event. These are 6 minute demos live on stage using real working code and no mockups.

The following describes the evolution of the SAP InnoJam and DemoJam at SAP TechEd events from 2015 onwards.

2015 is the year for change (keep in mind this does not effect the SAP TechEd event in Bangalore this coming March) and evolution and our intent is to alter both of these events to create the next generation of opportunities for customers, partners and employees. Moving forward the SAP InnoJam will remain a registration (pay event) where individuals or teams may register in advance knowing nothing more than what technologies will be focused on (SAP HANA, OPENUI5, SAP HANA Cloud Platform, SAP Mobile Platform*, SAP Lumira*) as well as the overall theme (general area of interest, e.g. Public Sector, Areospace, etc) leading up to the events (8 weeks, 6 weeks, 4 weeks, 2 weeks, 1 week, 48 hours) they will receive more and more information about the topic, theme and challenge as well as the technologies.

So there will no longer be a submission process for the DemoJam but rather you will have to compete first in the SAP InnoJam live on site for a chance to grace the DemoJam stage!

Upon arrival to the event the teams will be assigned their working spaces and a challenge (a solution to create); these challenges will be chosen by a select group of internal and externals. They will then be given the 30 to 36 hours to work on their solution. Near the end of the event a judging committee will review each team and "short list" 6 teams to proceed to the DemoJam at SAP TechEd event live on stage.

I think this is enough to get hit you with at the moment but more will come and more information about this year's theme as well. This is a major change for us and we expect some confusion, concern and perhaps even some disappointment. We will be hosting some public webinars to share more thoughts as well as several more pieces of content to dive into more detail. Until then feel free to email "sapinnojam@sap.com", myself or even comment here if you have questions.

** UPDATE **

I guess we left off the main reason for "why" we are doing this. It's very simple we want to get to a challenge culture and event and pit everyone against each other with the same starting point. A level playing field for everyone competing against each other.

Hi Craig

This is great, will lead to a fair competition between participating teams. Will the InnoJam concept remain the same? With experts on site to support during realization? And will there be business representatives to understand the business challenge?

Kind regards

Twan

Thanks for the positive feedback. Rest assured that we will do, with probably a little more in advance, but we will save that to later blogs 😉

Hi Craig,

Very good new approach.

I join the SAP Innojam for the beginnen a lot of times. First as a participant, now as SAP UI5/Hana expert. Mostly people (sap technical minded) worked hard for 48 hour, mainly on technology and mostly there was not following up.

I also joined as a SAP Expert the ESA Appathon 2015 (sponsored by SAP, see ESA APP CAMP) and here the prize was presentation at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The teams (open for every one, but mostly non-SAP people) where very innovative by connecting SAP solutions and Satellite Data of ESA.

From my experience this competition approach (compete for Demo Jam) and bringing SAP solutions to none SAP area is definitely a better way.

I hope the  SAP innojams will change in that way, that we will bring SAP Innojam to (new) functional areas like SAP did, by sponsoring the ESA Appathon.

Kind regards,

I Like the change for Demojam entry. Gives the same starting point to the community.

Hi Craig,

Interesting new approach.

Leveling the playing field for DemoJam is a clear win IMO.

Also the possibility for teams to register (together) for SAPInnojam might be very interesting.

On the other hand, there's also a chance that new technical innovations which require more than just 36 hrs won't make it onto the stage anymore. I'm thinking of e.g. SAPLink, use of Drones, but there have been more of these in the past.

Anyway, making changes requires courage, so kudos for that! If you don't try something out, you'll never know how it will work out...

Also: thanks for the transparent and timely communication.

Let's see how this works out. 2015 is going to be interesting.

Hi Craig,

In line with the comments of all the others above, I believe this is a huge step in the, to my opinion, right direction. It will, as also stated by twan.vandenbroek2, lead to a more fair competition.

One final question from my side: The winner of the Innojam in Berlin last year was a enthousiastic group of students who'd created a marvellous "remote Farmville" solution. Eventhough the solution was great, the students were enthousiastic and they held a wonderfull pitch, no actual SAP software was used during the development of their product. No intention to bring them down, but will the actual usage of SAP products also be checked during the upcomming Innojams?

As in all InnoJam events (even the last one in Berlin) yes of course we will verify the usage of at least one SAP technology. Those students used SAP HANA - so hopefully if there is a rumor they used no SAP technology this will put that to an end. The students used SAP HANA for their demo, in fact it was my own SAP HANA Dev Edition that they used, I even made sure they got their DU exported before the week was over.

It's a welcome change. DemoJam has been in need of an overhaul for some time, and the fact that the community has spurned the large partner-invested Jams for community-invested Jams is testimony to this. The format ran its time.

I would advocate the consideration of how partners can integrate with this process. Gaining local partner and customer sponsorship in Jam events might be great. Remember the very first InnoJam?

That said, it's sad. RIP Demo Jam. Le Roi est Mort... Vive Le Roi!

On a basic level partners can register and join as a competing team as well. In terms of visibility this past year was actually the first time we offered those pesky "sponsorship" options for DemoJam as well.

you will have to compete first in the SAP InnoJam

Is it only the InnoJam event right before the SAP TechEd? Or are the winners from local SAP Inside Track InnoJam events also considered as DemoJam participants?

As we had almost zero (I think it was 2 demos - or at least only 2 told us) submit from a local InnoJam this past event we are only focused on the event right before SAP TechEd this time. It's something we can discuss but based on past responses and where we even heard about InnoJam's happening we did not see the need to consider it.

Thanks for clarification. One of the two was the entry of leo.vanhengel and me  .

So Leo - will you join InnoJam Barcelona this year?
