Hi Rob,
I think it is always good to start with a bit of technical stuff i.e. ABAP reason being technical is always helpful even if you learn less. By the time you are in mid of course you will have fair understandfing of the SAP and can decide further.

Hi,
All the SAP Modules are very best in its own way.
Choosing the right module depends on your domain knowledge/experience.
If you want to be a techie then you can choose ABAP/XI/EP/MI/BI etc.
For functional you have many modules like SD/MM/FI/CO/HR/CRM/SEM/SRM etc..
For more details in this regard jus check https://service.sap.com

Well Rob, the nice thing about SAP, is that there is so much of it, and hence a lot of different areas which you can focus on and specialize in. Since I am an ABAP Developer, of course, I am a little bias, and want to tell you to go for a more technical track. I think that to be a well rounded technical person(in regards to SAP), you should know a little ABAP, at least how the ABAP dictionary works. There are many tools which are based off of information from the ABAP dictionary.
Anyway, if you like ABAP, then any of the business suite solutions would be a good choice to specialize in, since they all run on the ABAP stack(i think). CRM is pretty hot, and I see a lot of jobs for CRM consultants, more than any other Business suite component aside from ERP.
You could also extend into the XI area. Exchange Infrastructure is pretty hot as well.
And of course BW/BI(Business Warehouse/Business Intelligence) is right up there on the list.
