hello,
I have trained in ABAP. But didnt go for any certification exam. Does cetification really matters while getting in to the job or getting through the interview?

Well , it may help you in the curriculum vitae selection, but i think that recruiters will look for real job experience first, almost in my experience.
If you are a junior consultant, i dont think that certification would give better chances.

unfortunately i don't know the UK market, as i live in Spain.
I'm certified in BW (C_TBW45_70) and has helped my career here in Barcelona, in my very specific case.
But the decision to get certified is at end upon to you. You should consider the economical effort, your time to dedicate to study ...
So my advice is that if you can afford it , economically, time , effort ... go for it , it wouldn't hurt your SAP career. But if not, i don't believe that the fact of not being certified should be a definitive barrier for your goals, you can always demonstrate that you have been trained in ABAP.
