Dear All,
Following up on Bob and Martin's messages above, I am interested in supervising PhD students in the BI area. Please be aware that, as a student, your PhD would need to have a focus on the challenges and issues of BI (several are noted in both this and other threads) and not on SAP technology per se - though you may well use SAP technology or additions to it to develop/demonstrate solutions to issues and challenges.
We offer full and part-time study options and details can be found at the following URL:
http://www.brunel.ac.uk/about/acad/siscm/disc/pg/phd
I do not mean to use this as an advert for my institution in particular - as noted in other posts there are many choices open to you.

Hello Bob,
my primary interest is not in BI/WB/BO but I would love to hear more about the opportunities. Maybe I would not be eligible to study under all the nice people you have named, but would be cool, if they would establish their online appearance here and could recruit the new students (that is what the young guys want) or to get people to work on their ideas/ research/ innovations (what they could use).
Even if I would not get any special paper (like PhD) degree for the work, I would be interested in meeting these people and help them or discuss their ideas. Maybe they would consider my experience relevant and would treat like a partner and not like a slave how they would treat you here, at our local universities. This could even bring up some new ideas/ opportunities for both sides, what would be great.
regards Otto
Hello Guy,
If you're interested in studying in the UK or in Ireland I can certainly make some recommendations. Lancaster University is a very aggressive SAP user and promotes its relationship with us widely. They have a '6' rating for research (UK institutions get graded every 5-6 years from 1 to 5 with an additional star given to universities that achieve particularly high standard - Lancaster achieved a 5* twice and in these exceptional circumstances get awarded a 6. They are always looking for PhD students - especially those with a consulting element. They run a course called 'IT and the Management of Change' for example - an MSc that focuses on SAP consulting.
Alternatively Sheffield Hallam, City, Surrey, Brunel and Warwick are also good candidates. However I would suggest that Lancaster is of particular interest to you because a Professor called Reuben Edwards based there has a partciular interest in BI - particularly with regard to sports and retail.
If you were interested in Ireland your best bet would be the National Univerity of Ireland, Galway. This is a top class institution based only 2 miles from SAP's EMEA service centre and so there are very close links there.
All the best for your studies!

Hi Carol,
Thanks for this vey helpful answer. I contacted Colorado Tech University - on line to obtain more info. Concerning the residencies, this means that I shall have to fly over from Europe to the USA serveral times a year. Perhaps a grouping of the residnecies is possible. Anyway you proved that it is possible to obtain that degree while working. Congratulations to you.
Sincerely
Guy Mathys

Hi Guy
I received my doctorate from the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland, a very dedicated SAP University Alliances member, See www.unisg.ch and look for their English pages (choose the language at the top of the page) and the doctoral studies programs. International Business, my area, is headed by Prof. Martin Hilb. Even though these are full-time programs, he allowed me and some other students to pursue our degrees while working full-time in other countries. Prof. Hilb also encouraged us to find other professors on campus to supervise us who were more directly involved in research in our area of expertise - i.e. strategy, IT, corporate governance (my interest), finance, business innovation, etc.
I was able to condense my residence periods to just a few weeks over the first year - most others used 3 semesters (1.5 years). We used teleconferences over my dissertation semesters and I returned for my defense in person. I also was required to be there for my graduation. I was living in Germany and the USA at the time. But I know of others who were living in France, USA, and even China. The times we spent in Switzerland were condensed It was quite a challenge, but worth it. St. Gallen is a founding member of the Council of European Management Schools (CEMS) which includes recognized leading research universities in business and economics in the world.
I also had a colleague at Reutlingen University, a fellow professor who while he worked full-time as a vice-dean and then vice president started and completed his doctorate at Erasmus University in the Netherlands in operations management. This is also a very highly regarded university. There are many other examples of people pursuing doctoral studies parallel to work all over the world. Of course, it is quite difficult, but you know that.
You could use your business network contacts, including in your own firm, to link to professors at some universities, UA members are listed under "University Alliances Around the World" on the right hand side of the following page https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/overview of our UA community portal. Most professors want full-time graduate students to live and work full-time for them doing research and teaching. However, some are open to very experienced people with innovative ideas to research parallel to working, because they bring diversity and different perspectives to the table.
Good Luck!
Bob

Hello
Hello
Please review the list of member universities as published in our University Alliances Community portal site at http://uac.sap.com .
Using the link you will land on our Welcome Page and you will find a box on the right that says UA Around the World. Select the Program Overview link. On the Program Overview page there is another right hand box entitled University Alliances Around the World and this provides a listing of all our member institutions.
The listing is sorted by country, so look for your country of interest in the tabs at the bottom of the spreadsheet. Most of our partner universities offer PhD programs. BI/Analytics is of great academic and professional interest right now.
Thanks for your engagement and interest. Please stay involved in and contribute to our on-line community.
Best Wishes
Bob LoBue
I recently graduated with my Doctorate in Computer Science with emphasis in Enterprise Information Systems. The topic of my research was Business Intelligence. I received my education and degree from Colorado Tech University in Colorado Springs, CO. It is an online program with residencies several times per year. I've been happy with the program and am happy to have finished. I kept my full time position and still completed the program.
Sincerely
Dr. Carol Behrmann, DCS-EIS
