"Inspired students can offer businesses fresh idea while receiving valuable experience"
Keeping this notion in mind, SAP University Alliances in collaboration with SAP Rapid Deployment Solution, and SAP Value Prototyping teams rolled out a new innovative project, on Social Business Network powered by SAP HANA, to a group of students from the University of Ludwigshafen. The goal is to take advantage of unstructured and structured data residing in business networks and external social networks like Facebook, Google+ and Twitter, to provide real-time sentiment analysis along with predictive analysis, leveraging SAP HANA. On one hand, this project will provide an excellent opportunity for the students to work directly with the latest in-memory technology, e.g. SAP HANA, to enhance their technical skills. On the other hand, it will help SAP customers gain the possibility to react faster to changing market trends and sentiments, as well as early identification of product, service or brand issues with an affordably priced solution. Additional business benefits include gaining insights into customer requests for lead generation, product/service issue and topics/context around market sentiments.
To keep things rolling the first kick-off of the Proof of Concept (PoC) project took place on April 18, 2013. Five students from the Information Management and Consulting master course at the University of Applied Sciences Ludwigshafen and their Professor Dr. Klaus Freyburger will join hands in building a Scrum team. They decided on having a bi-monthly sprint and a sprint meeting at the end of each month. They will be leveraging the latest HANA capabilities (Text Analysis, Extraction, Predictive Libraries, and HTML5 UI) and infrastructure provided in the cloud by SAP Value Prototyping.
The solution offering will focus on two usage models:
1. A trial usage with limited capabilities but free of charge.
2. An enterprise usage with full functional capabilities and a subscription price model.
Both models will be deployed on a cloud environment based on SAP HANA Sentiment Intelligence RDS version 2. These systems would be able to connect to external data pools from social networks and other business networks like SAP Business Suite, SAP CRM and SAP StreamWork Feed API. The expected final presentation of the Proof of Concept will be held on 31st July 2013.
The cooperation between the University of Applied Sciences Ludwigshafen and SAP University Alliances has been a long tradition; for both sides it is a big success story. The University of Ludwigshafen uses curricula and software for teaching purposes since 1994. The close cooperation of the university with SAP exists at different levels including: curriculum development, student trainees, thesis and graduates at SAP, and former SAP colleagues as professors. Previously, the students from University of Applied Sciences Ludwigshafen had also worked on the project “Sentiment Analysis powered by SAP HANA 2012” with SAP University Alliances. The goal was the analysis of unstructured data of the social networks. The project was a big success and was done with a great amount of motivation by the students during their 2012 summer semester Since then selected students from the university were invited to share their results with the UA community EMEA during the SAP Academic Conference EMEA in Dresden in September 2012, and in Madrid at the SAPPHIRE NOW/SAP TechEd conferences where they have been an important part of the UNICEF dashboard competition. The current project, “Social Business Network powered by SAP HANA”, will further strengthen this tie and provide room for further innovation on both sides. The project is a complimentary part of a course for the M.Sc. Information Management and Consulting students at University of Applied Sciences Ludwigshafen in the summer semester 2013.
