A group of students from Missouri University of Science and Technology is helping plan a computer-simulated business competition for Missouri high school students. The event will allow teams of students to compete in a setting that mimics an actual business.

Missouri S&T has teamed up with the University of Missouri-St. Louis, the Midwest Chinese American Science and Technology Association (MCASTA) and Washington University in St. Louis for the competition. During the event, high school students will learn about enterprise resource planning (ERP), specifically how information technology can be used to advance business processes to achieve business objectives.

The 2013 ERP SAP Simulation Competition will be held from 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, in the J.C. Penney Conference Center on the UMSL campus. Registration opens at 9:30 a.m. An awards ceremony will be held after the competition. The first-place team will win $360; the second-place team will win $240; and the third-place team will win $120. All students in the competition will receive a participation gift.

“SAP ERP, the world’s leading enterprise information system is used by more than 80 percent of Fortune 200 companies,” says Dr. Bih-Ru Lea, director of the Center for ERP at Missouri S&T. “IT will be used to give students the simulated experience of running their own companies like an IT professional at companies like Apple, Microsoft, Intel, Boeing or Disney.”

As part of the event, faculty members from a variety of disciplines representing colleges and universities in Missouri and Illinois will be on hand to meet high school students and their parents and discuss college life and admissions.

Students from Missouri S&T who are planning the 2013 ERP SAP Simulation Competition are:

  • Sean Howell, a sophomore in information science and technology from Rolla, Mo.
  • Montana Long, a sophomore in information science and technology from Platte City, Mo.
  • Thomas Cooper, a junior in information science and technology from O’Fallon, Mo.
  • Ryan Roark, a senior in information science and technology and business and management systems from St. James, Mo.
  • Iris Russell, a senior in information science and technology and business and management systems from Rolla, Mo.
  • Yohana Woldemariam, a graduate student in information science and technology from St. Louis.
  • Blake Smith, a senior in business and management systems from Cape Girardeau, Mo.

The competition is sponsored by Cargill, SAP University Alliance and the Devision of Education of Taipei Economics and Culture Office-Houston.
