Last week at SAP TechEd in Las Vegas, a group of University of Notre Dame students fully participated in the conference agenda showcasing the unique partnership with SAP and the State of Indiana around data analytics.  The students attending were Jennifer Lardner, Rebecca Shute, Laura Shute, Paul Mahony, Stephen Ennis, and Olivia Romeo.  They were joined by the assistant Director of the ESTEEM Program, Dr. Sunny Shah.

ESTEEM (Engineering, Science & Technology Entrepreneurship Excellence Masters Program) is an innovative 11-month entrepreneurship master’s program designed to equip a person with the specific skills required to launch a business.  Unlike the traditional M.B.A., an entrepreneurship master’s focuses on the direct application of business skills to an entrepreneurial environment. ESTEEM sets itself apart from other entrepreneur master’s programs by putting students in the middle of real-time startup development.  The ESTEEM program agreed to work with Indiana’s Management Performance Hub this semester to analyze traffic crash data as part of the new class.  Indiana has become a very innovative and nationally recognized SAP business partner in using data analytics.  In particular the Indiana State Police sponsored the class project and shared a very large data set of traffic crash data spanning ten years for use in the class.  Students presented their findings back to state leaders on October 14th and retold the story at several events during TechEd.

The following events kept the group very busy during the week:

• Monday Night Keynote:  SAP Executive Vice President Steve Lucas welcomed Jenny Lardner, Stephen Ennis and Dr. Shah on stage to join him in sharing the ESTEEM analytics story to over 5000 conference attendees and many more thousands more through live streaming video.

• Tuesday Expert Session:  David Ryan a leader in the Indiana Office of Technology, presented at a small group expert session. The Indiana Management Performance Hub has a mission to develop an industry leading comprehensive enterprise wide data driven management system.  Its vision is to help Indiana have the most effective, efficient, and transparent state government in the country.  Part of the initiative is to partner with Indiana's leading universities to solve some of the state's toughest problems in various public sector domains including healthcare, crime, fraud and transportation.

• Tuesday Night Viz-a-Thon with Made in a Free World:  The Notre Dame students formed a team to compete in the Viz-a-Thon on Tuesday night.  The SAP Analytics team worked with Made in a Free World (MIAFW), an organization that helps businesses understand the risk of forced labor in their supply chains through the use of data.  Teams used data from MIAFW to help solve specific real-world business challenges with SAP Lumira. MIAFW is trying to help free over 30 million people from slavery around the world.

• ESTEEM Expert Session: Stephen Ennis, Rebecca Shute and Laura Shute took the podium to review the Data Analytics course with the State of Indiana. Data analytics is about getting data and assessing it and doing analysis, doing visualizations, pulling items out of it that you can use for decisions. State officials, who lack sufficient staff to analyze the high volume of statewide data, worked with students to analyze the data as part of the course.

• Live TV Studio:  Paul Mahony and Olivia Romeo joined Ann Rosenberg and Brian Reaves of SAP to discuss Driving Digital Transformation: Strategic Innovation Youth Services from SAP University Alliances.  The six minute interview used the Indiana Analytics project as an example of how to engage with leading minds at great universities.

• Show Floor Video Interview:  On Thursday, Rebecca Shute and Laura Shute were interviewed and filmed on the show floor to highlight SAP Analytics in action with the State of Indiana project.

All the students represented Notre Dame, Indiana and our SAP partnership with great professionalism and enthusiasm.  I am very grateful for their outstanding participation in the course and throughout our week at TechEd.
