SAP sponsored a Hackathon at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston, Massachusetts, USA on January 4-5, 2014 in which medical professionals and data scientists teamed up to use SAP HANA to mine a database of 10 years of patient data collected from one of the large teaching hospitals in Boston. The MIMIC database is large and complex, with over 40 tables, some of them with millions of rows of information.

There were 70+ participants who formed 16 different teams working around the clock. The teams had to include medical professionals (doctors, nurses, pharmacists) as well as computer professionals.

The team from SAP loaded MIMIC into our HANA One cloud offering. Each team was provided their own instance of HANA running in the cloud that they could use to explore and analyze the ICU data. Teams formulated a hypothesis which they then had to prove out by analyzing the real patient data.

Finally on Sunday evening, the teams gathered to make their final pitch to the judges. 10 teams chose to make a presentation, including the team from London who presented at midnight their time before their 6AM shift at the hospital.

SAP University Alliances congratulates our SAP colleague, John Ellenberger, on an outstanding event.

I encourage University Alliances members to view John’s blog which includes links to short videos of the teams’ presentations and their insights on advancing medical practice based on data mining using SAP HANA. These would be good resources to share the value of SAP HANA with students.
