The next round of introduction of our amazing participants in the App Camp starts:

Today, we would like to present Julian Laval from UK who has been studying Computer Science and is now in his 2nd year at the University of Bristol.

Julian’s answers to our interview questions:

Why did you apply to participate in the App Camp?

My teammates and I are highly interested in entrepreneurship, and hackathons give us a platform to conceive and develop interesting ideas in a high-stakes, competitive environment. The prospect of being recognized by big names like ESA and SAP, and building technologies that are impactful on a global scale is extremely exciting!

What did you like and what did you experience during the Appathon?

Being surrounded by like-minded space enthusiasts and entrepreneurs, as well as being able to converse with experts in the field on the drop of a hat was a phenomenal experience. If I say so myself, the rush of winning was also rather fantastic!

What are your plans with the project for the future?

Our ambition is to enhance food security and optimize farming on a global scale. On top of providing an unparalleled crop-monitoring experience to farmers using the latest and greatest satellite technologies, we're looking towards the future and want to be the first to build and deploy predictive monitoring that identifies potential problems before they happen. Certainly not an easy feat, yet an incredible vision that we want to see to fruition!

Say something about your team/tell us how you met?

My teammates and I all study Computer Science at the University of Bristol and were friends prior to the hackathon. In November 2014, we participated in another hackathon in London (which we won), and instantly clicked as a team. We feel that part of our strength is how we complement each other’s skillsets (with experience ranging from UI/UX design to game and software development and everywhere in between).

Share something funny or an anecdote that happened during the project?

As part of our university curriculum, we are having to develop a mapping application for a client. Likewise, our idea for another hackathon relied heavily on mapping technology. The ESA Appathon is therefore our 3rd concurrent mapping project. Needless to say, although we're starting to get tired of working with maps, we seem to be becoming veritable mapping experts!

Send us a very short description of your app design (1-2 sentences)?

FarmIQ (previously known as CropAdviser), is an app concept looking to harness the power of Earth observation data and agricultural big data to provide not only state-of-the-art crop monitoring but predictive monitoring that identifies problems before they happen.

                                                                                        Julian and his teammate Anda

We would like to thank Julian Laval and his team for their active participation @ App Camp and wish them all the best for the future.
