CSR Awards for volunteering in 2016 In 2016 the colleagues from SAP Labs Bulgaria invested 11 217 hours in volunteering. 64% of that goes to volunteering activities related to skill development and better education. Thanks to our devoted and enthusiastic colleagues we bring value-added topics through seminars, workshops and lectures at prominent Bulgarian universities, schools, conferences and other forums. Our huge effort and enthusiasm were recognized by different Bulgarian associations. As a result we are very proud and happy to receive four prestigious awards for contribution and volunteering. |
SoftUniada 2017 In January more than 520 young talents took part in the IT Olympiad organized by Software University. SoftUniada is being held for a second consecutive year and SAP Labs Bulgaria was again one of the main supporters. We are very proud that colleagues from SAP and students from ITversitys’ initiatives like Study iT First and Geeky Camp showed excellent results and won top medals. All participants received geeky T-shirts with the motto “Coding is the superpower of the future” and SAP’s logo. |
Sponsoring professional curriculum for IT teachers For a second year SAP Labs Bulgaria supports motivated school teachers by funding a one-year curriculum for further professional qualification in informatics and IT. The curriculum is organized by Sofia University’s Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics (FMI). It is designed for IT teachers, who want to further develop their skills and to implement the acquired knowledge into their classes and thus boost the development of their own students. The curriculum includes disciplines like object-oriented programming, databases and information systems, cloud technologies and others. One of the elective disciplines - Lego Robotics - will be delivered by one of our colleagues. In 2015/16 we supported 7 teachers from different cities and all of them graduated successfully in November 2016. The positive feedback was one of the reasons we decided to continue with the initiative. This year 11 teachers applied and 3 of them received funding to attend the curriculum. We are happy to collaborate with FMI towards achieving this initiative, which will bring us one step closer to having better education for students from all over the country. |
Collaboration with SMG After opening a Robotics lab at the Mathematics High School in Sofia (SMG) last year, we continue supporting the school in various initiatives and thus boost the students’ motivation for developing STEM skills. During last summer colleagues from SAP Labs Bulgaria were invited by the school board to participate in defining the school’s curriculum in informatics. The aim of this discussion was to align the school program with the business needs so that the youngsters are best prepared for the future. In addition to that since the start of the school year a colleague of ours teaches children from 5th and 9th grade the basics of C and C++. He even integrated his own online platform in the learning process and the kids are really fascinated to explore this new way of learning and thus solve problems and receive feedback in real time. |
Mentorship at TU Some of the best second-year students who participated in the Java course at the Technical University in Sofia had the opportunity to work on an individual project with the help of experienced SAP mentors. Within four weeks the students received valuable tips from our colleagues and completed their projects successfully. Finally all of them presented their results shared what they have learned. |
Back2School visits in Vratsa & Smolyan We started our Back2School initiative in 2014 and since then colleagues continue visiting the high schools they have graduated from and giving talks about the job of the software engineer. In the last quarter four of our colleagues visited their high schools in Vratsa and Smolyan. They gathered many interested students and spoke to them about SAP and their work as software developers – how a typical workday goes and how they develop their skills inside the company. In both cities the students were very active and asked a lot of questions. It turned out that they already knew about SAP Labs Bulgaria and our initiative for school students Geeky Camp. |
GeekyCamp 3.0 Finals The third edition of our programming school for youngsters started in September 2016 and after six months of hard work 13 teams presented their projects in front of a Jury and SAP colleagues on March 13th. It was inspiring to see how those talented students from 15 different schools all over the country worked in teams and successfully completed their ideas – from web and mobile applications to IoT projects and theoretical research on algorithms and genetics. Finally the SAP Jury had the really challenging task to select the best ones. We are very proud that some of the participants already received awards in other IT competitions and Olympiads presenting their GeekyCamp project. |
Hack TUES 2017 The third edition of HackTUES, a hackathon for high-school students organized and hosted by Technical School Electronic Systems (TUES) – Sofia, took place in the last weekend of March. The theme “Art && Creativity” attracted 150+ students from 8th to 12th grade that formed 31 teams working on web, mobile, desktop and hardware projects. SAP Labs Bulgaria was again an Alpha sponsor of the event, supported the students with mentors and had a member in the hackathon’s jury. SAP’s special award was given to Programartists for their project Made2Make – a robot that prints analog and digital circuits. Programartists, together with the top three teams in the final ranking, were invited for a visit to SAP’s office and our d-shop. |
University Courses completed in Winter Term 2016/2017 More than 30 dedicated volunteers from SAP Labs Bulgaria delivered regular lectures at the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics at Sofia University during the last winter term. Our colleagues invested lots of time and energy in preparing and delivering following courses:
About 200 students enrolled in all courses and more than 150 successfully completed their projects. The feedback we received from the students was extremely positive and they shared that they will definitely recommend those courses to the students next year. |
University Courses started in Summer Term 2017 The first Internet of Things course at Bulgarian University is delivered by volunteers from SAP Labs Bulgaria. In cooperation with the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics our colleagues prepared the content from scratch. Around 100 students subscribed and 20 of them were pre-selected via entry test. In addition to the IoT course, SAP colleagues are involved in delivering three more university courses:
