We are excited to introduce new learning assets from our Design Thinking Team.

Design Thinking Overview

Good ideas are sent from Heaven and creativity is the gift of God? The world of business has long since dispensed with such myths. Today it is generally accepted that creative ideas can also result from a process.

“To innovate successfully, we need both halves”, says David Kelley, founder and manager of design and innovation firm IDEO and head of the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design at Stanford University in California. “We have to design creatively and think rationally. That’s what defines ‘design thinking’.”

Design Thinking is a creative and iterative methodology to solve complex problems. It is a generic methodology, it can take different forms to meet different needs. It consists of several phases that imply “Understanding the problem space”, “Imagine the ideal” and “Designing the solution space”. When it comes to problem solving it is not only about the solution itself, it is also about creating momentum within the team to actually trigger corresponding and tangible actions. This implies that everybody needs to feel involved in order to fully support the identified solution. To ensure this, Design Thinking techniques are based on group dynamics that at the very end will create a so called “Collective Mind”.

One important learning when it comes to Design Thinking: It is not “a + b = c”, meaning that it does not work in a waterfall mode. This feels odd in the beginning but workshop results and customer feedback prove that it works. For SAP Services Design Thinking is really a mindset that we bring to the art of finding answers.
