At the request of our University Alliances member, we conducted a Design Thinking Workshop for the School of Information Systems of Singapore Management University (SMU) on 20 – 21 May 2014. A diverse team consisting of 16 university staff (12 professors and 4 administrative staff), 4 students and 5 SAP staff were involved. This workshop coached by Crispian Tan from SAP UA had 2 objectives:
I) Faculties to understand and experience the Design Thinking process to introduce to their students in the future school projects/curriculum.
II) Allow the participants to use Design Thinking on an existing challenge which the School management faced which is to attract quality pre-university students to select School of Information Systems as their choice of study.
During the 2-day workshop, the team had the opportunity to undergo the process of Design Thinking based on the learnings from Stanford University professor d.school founder, David Kelley. The solution-based thinking forced the participants to re-learn and re-visit many of their traditional methodology to solve problems and use a empathizing approach with end-users to help them generate innovative insights. Many of the participants were grateful for having undergone this workshop.
