Tom, what inspired you to become an SAP Mentor?
I felt stuck in my progression, and I stumbled upon the book “Purple Cow” by Seth Godin while I was on vacation. It inspired me to step up and do more. I started to be active on the SAP community, I attended events, I networked with other community members, and I also started blogging. I discovered that I really liked writing down my thoughts and knowledge to share them within the community. That got the attention of the SAP community advocate, and she ignited the fire even further by encouraging me to share more. I’ve also always had a mentor who believed in me and kept me close while offering guidance. He helped me out to grow and learn continuously throughout my career and he still does today.
What advice would like to share with other SAP community members?
You would be amazed of what you can achieve by putting in an effort and going out of your comfort zone. The sky really is the limit and the only one holding you back, is you. Dream the impossible and then try to achieve your dreams. Seek out others who have a similar mindset. Share your knowledge and find that you learn more by doing so than by guarding everything and keeping everything to yourself. Expand your network and thrive with all the connections made, create win-win situations and everyone will benefit from that collaboration and don’t forget to enjoy the journey along the way. Nothing comes instantaneously, it requires effort, long term effort but step by step you can get achieve your goals, one day at a time, one hour at a time. You don’t have to do all of this on your own either, seek out a mentor who has been through the journey, who has achieved a lot and seek out the advice on how you can get there.
