Hi Experts,
I need to replace a faulty meter with another good meter(used). The last reading on faulty meter that's being removed has reading 200(MR). The actual consumption recorded for the current period is 100.
The new meter being replaced is a used one in the past & it has last reading(MR) of 500.
Questions:
1)Now what could be the starting meter reading(MR) after installation? will it be reset to 200+ or will it be starting with 500+?
2)How does the consumption from old meter gets carried fwd & calculated to the next meter for billing?

Hi Ricky,
Most of the utilities reset the new meter reads to zero before installing due to the reason that each replaced meter goes to meter shop for accuracy testing ( where it’s reset to zero after testing) before it’s installed at a new device location else there is a no guarantee that utility is not installing a new faulty meter by replacing an old faulty meter.
Let’s take the below case where new meter had an existing MR other than zero before installation :
MR on the new meter ( RR- 21) while installation : 100
MR on the old meter while removal ( RR – 22) : 12000
Previous periodic read for old meter ( RR- 01): 11643
Current periodic read ( RR – 01)for new meter : 100
Shown below is how SAP will calculate the consumption (assuming a register factor/ multiplier of 1)
Based on the above information , provided below are the answer to your questions:
1) Now what could be the starting meter reading(MR) after installation? will it be reset to 200+ or will it be starting with 500+?
[Ans]: You should enter index read as the MR for the new meter while installing ( EG31) which is 500 in your case.
2)How does the consumption from old meter gets carried fwd & calculated to the next meter for billing?
[Ans]: As explained above
Hope above explanation provides you with better clarity for your question.
Thanks,
Ajay

Install it with the reading on the dials at the time of the physical installation.
The register treats this as a zero point.
The Old meter is removed with the final reading on the dials at the time of the physical removal.
The register treats this as the terminus.

Basically the difference between readings is ignored between removal & install readings.
For consumption, there are 2 main approaches, for a hard remove, & install, it would be easiest to install the new device with a period consumption that matches the old device.
With a replacement, the logical register can be interpreted to carry the consumption forward.

Its actually the same for device modification also, you can update the reading in case of dial creep to prevent overflow on low consumption meters.

Hi Daniel,
Sorry i am not sure if i understood your answer clearly.
So in my case should i give initial MR reading as 200 + 1 or 500 + 1? I think i cant take the MR of a device back to old reading.

you enter the results per meter as they appear. IS-U will account for the fact that the final read of 200, does not include 300 units added to the total consumption to the install reading of 500 of the new meter. These differences are ignored when determining the consumption to bill.

Thanks a lot Ajay Jain.
Question .- what is Index MR as you mentioned in your reply?
