How does your utility manage the intake, processing, and support of customer applications for new loads and the integration of generation energy sources across residential, commercial, and industrial sectors?
Have you implemented any tailored solutions, either within SAP or on other platforms, to facilitate this?
A group of Utility SAP Customers, Partners and SAP thought leaders are working on addressing the business process of Grid Interconnection for load, generation and energy transfers. The working group has researched this important area to study the current approaches by customers and what is offered by SAP to build a perspective on what could be done to support the community. This case study and capabilities review was shared with other utilities at the SAP International Energy & Utilities Conference in Rotterdam, April 9th - 10th 2025. It's planned to continue this outreach through other channels and events in the coming weeks to begin a wider conversation.
At the Energy & Utilities event the following slides were shared with an aim to collect together Utilities across the global with similar requirements and needs in the next few years around customer requests for new load (new service / new business) and generation interconnections.
First the Market forces and dynamic change over the last 10 years is outlined for the California market:
Alignment to the SAP Utility DER Platform was started to connect the needs of interconnection to DER requirements:
Specific capabilities are made for each aligned element of the DER Platform with an indication of if that capability is seen as a true new capability or one that could be an SAP S/4HANA Roadmap item.
Finally an outline of the high-level process for Grid Interconnection is presented.
The call to action is to register your organizations interest in engaging with this working group with the aim to influence SAP's future products and other opportunities through SAP Services, CIS and Partners. This is a great topic that many utilities have put together custom solutions for. I think it may require people to agree on some standard practices to ground the process - which would be a good thing in this space if you ask me.
