The Urgent Need for Transition

In recent years, the escalating concerns about the consequences of climate change and the environmental repercussions of traditional energy sources have gained significant attention globally. The root cause of these changes is closely linked to our reliance on traditional energy sources, such as coal, oil, and natural gas. One of the most significant environmental impacts of traditional energy sources is the emission of greenhouse gases (GHGs), particularly carbon dioxide (CO2).

By embracing renewable energy, enhancing energy efficiency, and supporting innovative policies, we can mitigate the adverse effects of climate change and protect our planet for future generations. The time to act is now, and every step taken towards sustainability counts

In an era where sustainability is not just a buzzword but a business imperative, SAP is leading the charge with a robust strategy focused on creating a sustainable future. As a global leader in enterprise application software, SAP recognizes the critical role it plays in driving sustainability across industries.

The Rise of Prosumers in the Energy Sector

The energy industry is undergoing a profound transformation, characterized by a significant shift where industries are not just consumers but also producers of energy. This paradigm shift is driven by technological advancements, regulatory changes, and the pressing need for sustainable practices. As a result, the traditional boundaries between energy producers and consumers are becoming increasingly blurred.

The traditional model of centralized energy production, where large power plants generate electricity and distribute it to consumers, is being challenged by a more decentralized approach. Advances in renewable energy technologies, such as solar panels, wind turbines, and energy storage systems, enable businesses to generate their own electricity on-site. This shift is fostering the rise of "prosumers" – entities that both produce and consume energy.

The cost of renewable energy technologies has dropped significantly over the past decade, making them more accessible to businesses. Solar and wind power installations are now viable options for companies looking to reduce their carbon footprint and energy costs.

Digital technologies and smart grids play a crucial role in managing decentralized energy systems. Smart meters, sensors, and advanced analytics enable real-time monitoring and optimization of energy usage and production. These technologies facilitate demand response, where industries can adjust their energy consumption based on grid conditions, thereby enhancing overall grid stability and efficiency.

Leading the Change towards Energy Transition with Innovative Solutions

SAP’s dedication to sustainability is reflected in its ambitious goals and comprehensive strategy. The company aims to achieve net-zero emissions across its entire value chain by 2030. This commitment is not just about reducing its own carbon footprint but also about helping other businesses track, manage, and reduce their emissions.

SAP recognizes the importance of decentralized energy production in the transition to sustainable energy systems. By leveraging advanced technologies and digital solutions, is helping industries become active participants in energy production. SAP’s solutions help optimize these systems, ensuring that energy is used efficiently and improving the condition of their assets.

The SAP Energy Park Initiative

The Walldorf Campus is a testament to SAP’s commitment to sustainability, where visitors can explore firsthand how SAP’s latest technological advancements and innovative solutions integrates into every aspect of its operations.

These showcases highlight real-world applications, installations and demonstrate the potential for your organization to leverage these innovations for enhanced efficiency and growth:

At the SAP Experience Center customers have the chance to explore the transformative journey from energy consumers to advance prosumers. With the S.MART Energy Shop showcase, customers and partners embark in firsthand on a transformation journey that navigates the intersection of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), the rise of the prosumer, and the power of digital innovation.

E-Mobility is a crucial puzzle piece for companies and individuals to reduce emissions and to achieve net zero. Many industries such as Oil, Gas & Energy, Utilities or Automotive see the value in redefining their business models resulting in new growth opportunities as charging offerings need to be where people spent time. Energy Retail is the case to demonstrate SAP’s industry convergent capabilities combining and uplifting a shopping experience with EV charging to gain additional loyalty benefits.

Power Plants are core assets for Utilities and Energy companies and are also of relevance for industrial customers to provide local and resilient energy. Monitoring the asset health, predictive maintenance and an active failure management are fundamental to handle the assets at low cost and to avoid outages. The SAP WDF50 is the power plant located in Walldorf which maintains and controls cooling and heating units at office. This is a real industrial case which enables and digitalize the Power Plant with the help of SAP Solutions.

Solar power generation is increasingly being adopted by every industry, with the goal of having renewable energy self-supply. The SAP Energy Park is equipped with an extensive array of solar panels, harnessing the power of the sun to generate clean, renewable energy. We plan to leverage these installations to demonstrate scenarios in a real-world environment that help to evaluate the energy produced, to manage investment and potentially play a role in flexibility markets.

E-Vehicles are a key factor for Energy Transition, it will not be possible without intelligence applied to the Charging Points and the EV Batteries. We want to demonstrate the capability of SAP to manage and optimize the recharge of its own fleet of EVs (mostly company cars for employees) and the overall energy consumption.
