Part 2 – Best Practices for Chemicals customer experience

With over 200 successful projects across the globe, SAP Best Practices for Chemicals became the standard for new ERP implementations and re-implementations in the chemical industry. As discussed in part 1 of this blog, SAP’s experienced partners build their solutions on SAP Best Practices for Chemicals by adding their accelerators and services which are tailored for the chemical industry.

Although the industry templates were originally designed for small and midsize companies, the Chemical Industry template, covering a wide range of business scenarios, evolved into a great starting point for companies of all sizes – up to the largest chemical companies in the world. Here are some recent customer examples:

When WeylChem was carved out of specialty chemicals manufacturer Clariant, the company had to set up its own IT solution fast. WeylChem did it in six months, rolling out a SAP ERP and SAP Environment, Health, and Safety Management solution  based on preconfigured SAP Best Practices for Chemicals. Some of the benefits experienced were:

  • Reduced IT costs by 15% or more
  • Lowered IT costs to below 1% of total corporate expenditure
  • Reduced costs and increased compliance assurance via integrated processes related to product safety and regulatory requirements

Kraton Performance Polymers, a leading global producer of engineered polymers, needed to consolidate and update its IT landscape. It went through an ERP reimplementation project based on SAP Best Practices for Chemicals. Here are some of the benefits Kraton experienced:

  • Time to close the books - from 20 to 4 days
  • Estimated cost savings - about US$ 13-15M yearly
  • Enterprise resource planning - about 50% cost reduction

Chemtura Corporation, a global manufacturer and marketer of specialty Chemicals and consumer products, upgraded and consolidated its two versions of SAP ERP to a single instance. It started to deploy SAP ERP based on SAP’s industry template Best Practices for Chemicals. As a second wave, it implemented SAP ERP for the CPG part of their business, using SAP Best Practices for CPG. Although it is a large and complex company, Chemtura experienced an excellent requirements coverage with SAP Best Practices for chemicals:

  • SAP Best Practices applicability in customer care and order entry - 80%
  • SAP Best Practices applicability in procurement - 90%
  • SAP Best Practices applicability in manufacturing - 80% to 90%
