EDI types in automotive industry

Hi all

Wanted to get some information on the types of EDI exchange between OEMs and their suppliers. What is the EDI format type that is used for JIT calls or for scheduling agreements and forecasted delivery schedule.Any information on middleware will also be useful.

Kind of depends on who the customer is and where in the world. Let's assume North America.

The OEMs and Tier ones typically send their suppliers X12 830's, usually with an X12 862 (but not always), and expect an 856 back, or an EDifact DELFOR, and usually a DELJIT, and expect a DESADV back.

830's usually mapped as DELINS or DELFOR Logical Idocs with E1EDP10-SCREL = 03, and end up on the Forecast Delivery Schedule tab of an SD Scheduling agreement.

If the 862's / DELJIT's just have dates and quantities, and maybe with a PO # at the header level, these are mapped as DELINS Idocs or DELJIT Idocs with E1EDP10-SCREL =02, and they end up on the JIT Delivery Schedule tab.

If the 862's contain RAN #'s, Delivery Order Numbers or Kanban numbers, these are mapped as SEQJIT Idocs and handled as Summarized JIT Calls.

Middleware might be from GXS/Inovis, Sterling/Gentran, Seeburger or Atos, for some examples.

The 'Motown' replies were correct. However the keys to EDI in automotive lie not in handling the EDI directly (a must), but in performing the 'release accounting' functions required to determine the net requirements for forecasting and shipping. You should go to the AIAG site (Automotive Industry Action Group). There are lots of EDI compliance issues to be addressed. Some companies (Honda for instance) requires that you scan the shipments as the truck is loaded to verify accuracy. Labeling is another compliance issue. Radley Corp. has been in the automotive edi space for over 24 years - take a look at their site. As an SAP Business One reseller, I work in the automotive space with them and am the author of the integration from Radley to SAP B1.

Just to add something which didn’t mention before that we are moving from VDA to global EDIFACT std. it’s the recommendations from UN to all automotive suppliers and OEM. Mostly USA using ANSI X12 and UEROPE specially German automotive is using VDA std. they are slowly moving from VDA to Global EDIFACT such as VW, Daimler etc. so learning EDIFACT is better way to start learning than VDA or X12. It’s obviously customer is king in you are working in the supplier side.
