Such a "slam-dunk" in the US courts is intended only to set the tone for the rest of the proceedings and encourage an out of court settlement between parties they actually do not want to have to deal with or understand the technology behind it (particularly the jury feel this way, I heard). In a way, it is an attempt at intimidation.

"Whisle blowers" also get a 10% commission, so it can even be used as a tactic to attract the likes of [Merv Grazinski|http://www.jokes2go.com/stories/25839.html] to lodge complaints and possibly even answer some ABAP interview questions on SDN as well...

For all we know, it could be an old plot between Bill Gates and Larry Ellison to sink SAP's shares and then take a shot at a hostile takeover (with 10% kick-back for the jury members).
