Tags are a good thing for social networks like tweeter where you have millions and millions of users. But on a more closed community like this we need more structured group topics or what used to be spaces. I still don't know how to search for questions using tags. The quick start guide tells you how to Register, how to Write a blog post, and how to Ask a question but not how to Search for questions.

Also the lack of notification subscriptions is a minus. I normally contribute with answers to questions about a topic I have some experience with and that I feel I can be of some help. But I cannot login constantly to see what new questions have been posted.

From a design point of view I'm not a fan of flat, minimalistic, responsive web sites. I normally work on a desktop computer with a large monitor and I don't see the meaning of having to endlessly scroll down to view content I could previously see on one page. I understand there is a lot of mobile users now days but I can't imagine writing a long post or answering a question using a smartphone. I believe the majority of this community users still use desktop computers.

And it's difficult to distinguish action elements from static elements due to the simplistic design. I don't want skeumorphism back but I just feel it takes more time to do the same work with the new site designs which are hard on the eye due to their all white nature and few contrast characteristics. I'm not alone on this as Office 2016 users feel the same about this kind of design...

Due to missing functionality, inadequately realized tag navigation, and the many bugs, I fear that we will see a huge drop in user activity, and that it will take a long time for the SCN to recover from this.

A lot will depend on how fast SAP can develop the useability of the platform.

VeselinaPeykova
Active Contributor

What I expect, is not a huge drop in user activity, but a huge increase of the workload for the moderators, who perform voluntarily work to keep the site as clean as possible.

Having in mind that moderator alerts will work differently now and that there seems to be less functionality than before - can moderators agree on a common approach how to report single answers or comments and somebody posts this in a blog with a few screenshots, so that we all can make things easier for them?

iklovski
Active Contributor

I think, that you both - Johan and Veselina - are right. Well, it happened already back in 2012, when new SCN was introduced. Then, it took 2-3 months to recover the level of activity known before. I do agree, though, that this time it might take much longer. Current platform doesn't seem to be fitting the needs of former SCN users... I think, that the entire population of SCN will have to 'migrate' as well. This new platform will hopefully attract new type of users and will endorse new type of user's activities. What is sure, though, that once Space concept is demolished, it will be no longer a platform for concrete problem solving, but rather a place for communications, idea's sharing and friendly chat.

denis_konovalov
Active Contributor

but SCN is not and should never be "Facebook clone with tech incline"... it has to remain a place for concrete problem solving, retaining information for years, not minutes...

denis_konovalov
Active Contributor

It's been 2 days and I see a huge drop in activities related to SAP BusinessObjects products/platform areas.
We used to have 50-60 posts or more a day in BI Platform and Web Intelligence spaces - I saw one new question posted last 2 days.

Hope this changes, because if our customers abandon SCN - they will log more support Incidents instead. And that will be a negative trend.

matt
Active Contributor

"This will be a negative trend". Maybe non-SAP employee moderators think differently. 😉

I was looking for the "quote" tag, but I can't find it. 😞

"Well, it happened already back in 2012, when new SCN was introduced." << Agree!

This new site reminds me a lot all the "pain" we suffer in 2012.

Destroyed forums and applies "spaces". Now WHAT! What is all "this" Q&A site? =(

Former Member

Where exactly can we log support incidents? I'm getting the runaround from everyone and there seems to be bugs in ATTP or its documentation.

Not to mention the additional frustration of this site being wildly broken and getting terrible response ("as designed") from the site support.

iklovski
Active Contributor

I thought (and hoped) so also. But, if some drastic measures are not taken, this won't be the case unfortunately. Current concept would with the most certainty invoke a change in the content, reducing to minimum concrete problem solving information. Just as an example, 6 question under SAP FI tag in the last 4 days, while a 'normal' day in FI space would have accounted for 120-160 threads.

dilorenzo

But I think those who did this change were SAP employees, weren't they?

Sometimes I think, there are too many of them.
So they get bored and change every support platform as soon as you get used to it and begin to work efficient with it:-)

I really don’t like new SCN. In couple of blogs it was mentioned focus on the quality rather than quantity. I could not see any quality with releasing new SCN. Best example is in last two days questions are more raised about the issues/defect in new SCN rather to actual issues or problems.

Purpose of introducing Karma is to focus on quality but KARMA itself is not working properly.

SAP is releasing same time new products and talking about performance but here we have a excel file to find out the TAGS. This is not justifying the SAP Products. Sorry to say but it’s true.

I don’t understand if new SCN is not ready with the expected functionality then why it is released. You can still continue with the old one for time being.

It’s very difficult to me to understand when I am active user since 2010 then how new users are going to be understand.

Amit

I believe that is why according to Marketing strategy which is why we get question in SCN that do you like the new SCN? Frankly speaking in these kind of similar contents will likely get more Yes then No, but the voting rates will also be high. But I was wondering though what is someone posts a voting poll or ask for feedback by simply asking do you find difficulty in the new SCN or would prefer the old SCN matters/ways? then I would wonder how many votes(Yes or No) would be here supporting the fact over the old question

Thanks,

Did anyone ask in old SCN "do you need a totally new SCN"?

Maybe that question could have saved some money for SAP 🙂

Oliver explains here why they decided to move away from the old platform (sorry about posting the whole blog link, I am too tired now to figure out how a direct link to a blog comment should look like):

https://blogs.sap.com/2016/09/27/inside-look-new-sap-community-powered-by-sap-hana-cloud-platform/

Yes, a move was probably necessary, and SAP might save money from website maintenance in the long term. Unfortunately, the result is... OK, you see the result...

Tomas_Buryanek

Things which are IMHO worse now:

  • SCN "Spaces" were simple better than tags

  • Mix of comments and answers in topics (for example this one)

  • Default sort of answers by date is not possible?

  • LOT of unused white space without content everywhere

  • It is hard to follow topics that I participate in. In SCN it was automatic? and we also got visible notifications in upper bar

  • ...

ricardojasso
Participant

Totally agree. What could possible be so important that comments need to be differentiated from answers? The important thing is to contribute as fast as we can without having to decide if my reply is a comment or an answer. And many times you need to ask several questions to the person who posted so you can propose a solution. That's not a comment nor an answer. Maybe a third type called Question is needed?

And I don't understand the structure of the whole thread. First there is a question. Ok. Then there are some answers (or comments) to that question. Fine. Then there's a section of Replies... wait, wasn't there already replies to the question? Are the first replies the real answer to the question or why are they at the top separated from the rest? I'm lost.

Tomas_Buryanek
Active Contributor

There is a very similar structure on well known StackOverflow forums. For example this topic: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/39726808/converting-a-string-to-int-set-the-int-to-0-if-string-is... You can see comments under Question and comments under answers.

But here on answers.sap.com it looks more confusing (probably because that web layout HUGE wasting of space).

ricardojasso
Participant

After having interacted with various forums like StackOverflow which I found hard to read/use for the same reason I explained above I stumbled with SCN and after using it for a while I thought "They just nailed it!". I finally found a dedicated space for my product with great contributors providing excellent feedback and a very good email notification system. The UX was excellent, concise, no wasted space, and easy to follow replies. Now all that is gone. The UX is just too fluffy and hard on the eye. And I still have to figure out how to find relevant Q&A about the product that interests me.

LutzR
Active Contributor

Hi Sebastian, in general I like the new design.

  1. But I am already struggling to decide if I should write a comment or an answer. I see that I am not allowed to comment (I don't know why), so I will write an answer.
  2. I am quite shure that this answer will not be seen by many people because answers are sorted by votes. Since my answer is new it will have no votes and therefore probably be quite down the list immediately.
  3. The use of screen space is not optimal. The interesting content of a QA list makes use of less than 20% of my 22" 1680x1050 screen and initially shows only 2,5 items:

  4. I am really very much missing the two stages kind of subscription. In old SCN I was able to follow so things would show up in my activity stream. But I could also flag stuff so I would get notifications about changes. Now I am afraid that special important content will be hiding in my overwhelmingly huge activity stream (you only have to follow one single fashionable subject like fiori to get a huge activity stream).

----------

Update to number 2.:

Yes this answer is last initially and even sorted behind the -10 votes at the end of the second page. So this completely takes away the motivation to answer to a longer thread where the correct answer was not yet bublished.

Hoping for better wheather.

Regards, Lutz

If it makes you feel a bit better, I don't use the default sorting by votes, but the oldest option.

I think, other members do the same - otherwise you won't understand the discussion - the highest voted answer is out of the context.

Personally, I don't mind reading the whole thread, even if it is several pages long - there have been discussion in the old platform with 10+ pages. If I am interested in the question (if I am the OP, I will be), then I will read all comments and answers - no matter if some of them appear controversial (a lot of negative votes).

Interesting to see comments on sorting by Votes - I haven't spotted any way of making a vote yet. Anyway, what would a vote mean in the context of the technical questions that are the bread and butter of SCN?

michael_simon4
Participant

Most of the downsides are already posted here (confusing, waste of space, no email notification, etc.) and in my opinion the new layout is a huge setback compared to the old SCN.

The worst thing is, that old SCN articles are not completely available anymore (see

https://answers.sap.com/questions/30197/what-happend-with-one-old-documents-from-scn-nothi.html). User spent hours in order to create helpful documents for others, which hold also years after the creation still valid information for others. The SCN was a network for professionals to exchange ideas and to help others. The old and new posted information needs to be available completely and permanent. All in all I won't participate in the new "SCN" any more until the major drawbacks are solved.

Best regards,

Michael

You are in them! "Questions & Answers" is the new forums platform. See the "Getting started" guide for more info, accessible from the yellow button at the top right of this page.

I think there is an error of concept here:

  • In a forum you could discuss an idea, or a thread for discussions.
  • In a Q&A site, the author post a doubt, and people answers.
Former Member
0 Kudos

You could be right, however, Q&A is all there is here. There's no separate forums concept. So things you used to post as discussions, post here as questions. Or as blog posts, depending on what's most appropriate.

sorry sir but this new concept is terrible or atleast will be until I get my head around it. Thats my personal opnion. I liked the old site where you had a separate forum per module or process area. I could jump into any forum and just read thru discussions or post a question. In the new design its all one big "space". How do I go to the MM forum or PP forum or QM forum ? I dont want to be searching thru one big space. Can we segregate question answers and blogs by module please ?

Former Member

You can segregate everything by "tag", which is I think what you're asking for, so the functionality already exists. The problem is finding the right tag, which at the moment isn't easy. I believe that's being worked on.

For now, you can use the "Browse" feature from the "Community" menu to find community pages for topics, and those pages will list any corresponding tags. You can then follow those tags to have content appear in your activity stream, or use the tag pages to browse by subject (bookmark them, perhaps).

It is different I agree, and requires a little bit of effort to learn to use after the old SCN.

ok how do I list all the messages in the MM forum for eg for the last one week ?

Sebastian,

The new platform seems to actively dissuade people from responding and helping our colleagues. By separating the archive from the current you have destroyed continuity. The products and the discussions have not stopped and restarted just because the platform has changed. Now if I am looking for an answer to a question that has already been encountered I have to look in two places - the archive and the new questions and answers area. It also seems to be harder to get to the 'right place' quickly. People asking a question are typically asking that question about a specific product. Previously we could go directly to the section on that product. Now it appears that we have to come to the questions and answers section and then filter for the product before we can get anywhere.

Also there is no credit given to users who over many years have willingly contributed their knowledge to assist colleagues. What incentive is there to continue doing this if it is invisible. The strength of the Community is that contributions are recognised, now there is no way of telling whether a response is from someone who has worked with the product for 5 minutes or 15 years.

Steffi_Warnecke

Hello Colin,

the search should bring back results from the archive and the newly created content. The second is "a bit" delayed currently, because the indexing of the old content is still going on and will continue for some days, as far as I know.

Instead of forums we now have tags and tag pages. I don't know of you already had a look at the "All about tags" page located under "Community > About the Community". It explains the concept and how to find "your" tags and how to use them for your needs. To find the spaces of your tags faster, there is an excel sheet attached to that page, too. It's the current workaround, until a build-in tag page with filters etc is implemented.

And then there is the "Browse the Community" page (also under "Community" in the header), where you can find community pages. These are pages, where several tags are combined together and are the closest thing the new platform has to the old space home pages.

.

I hope this will help you a bit to get started with the new SCN. 🙂

.

Regards,

Steffi.

PS: If you have more issues or questions concerning, it would be best to create an question and use the tag "Using SAP.com", as that is the tag for this kind of content. That way your questions won't drown in the feedback of this one. 😉

Steffi

OK I look forward to the archive content also coming back in searches.

But you don't address my main point - namely that the strength of the old Community was that there was visible recognition for those members of the community that gave their time to support their colleagues. This appears to have been completely scrapped.

The strength of this community is primarily dependent on the support of the experts who know about the usage and application of SAP products yet you ignore this.

Colin

Hello Colin,

I follow the mantra "Sharing is caring", so helping others helps myself, too, because I learn through it.

But I also like having new shiny badges or reaching goals and see some little counter go up, because someone liked my content.

I don't know if you haven't seen the Reputation page yet, where it's explained what is currently online reputation wise and - more important - what is still in store and planned and currently developed.
Why the old points system was scrapped was explained by the members of the Reputation team here and here.

Other than that I don't have any more information on this topic I could share. 🙂

It could have been a great opportunity for SAP to show how Hana can make a big difference with other DB (I do not know which DB was used by the old SCN Jive engine). Marketing by proof and not with slides 🙂

It is clear by now the new platform has not been well received by the community in general despite what might be said about “embracing change” for the sake of it. So here are five points I consider important to change to bring back the liveliness of the previous (I don’t like to use the word “old” which is most times interpreted as worse) platform.

  1. Put a selection box where we can select our tag of interest and see questions related to that tag only. Not a search box, a selection box with all available topics (official tags) visible. This is paramount and must be implemented ASAP. It is totally worthless to see 4,500+ questions on the queue as of now about subjects we don’t have any connection to. There are too many subjects in the SAP universe. I know that I can search for a question using the product of interest as the search criteria in hope to find a question with the corresponding tag of interest; then click on that tag and have the desired list displayed, but this is not practical. I feel like I was handed a new car and discovered that it doesn’t have a rearview mirror and the salesman tells me “Oh, we didn’t find it necessary anymore since you can lower the window, stick your head out and look back to see if there is a car behind you.” (!) And the Excel solution is, well, just embarrassing.
  2. Put the Question Status filter to Unanswered Questions by default so as to limit the queue to what’s important at the moment. (I understand Unanswered Questions are Open questions and Answered Questions are Closed questions, not just questions that have at least one answer). Answered questions are for people doing searches so they have low priority in the queue.
  3. Eliminate the sorting of replies by Votes. This is counterproductive to the desired agility of the question solving process because it makes it difficult to follow a thread and understand what is going on while it is being answered. This might be useful for people searching for answers but not for people answering questions. Sorting by Newest is also unnecessary. It should always be by Oldest. Chronology is, again, paramount. (The sort control can be left as is so long it is set to Oldest by default).
  4. Eliminate the ability to place comments directly on questions. This is so disturbing. Each time I review a question I have to scroll down past these comments to locate the start of the replies (answers). The replies list should start immediately after the question. If anyone has something to say about the question they just need to reply to the question as an answer. It should not matter if it is actually an answer or not. The important thing is to contribute.
  5. Eliminate the difference between comments and answers. And what about questions about the original question? Any reply should be treated the same and should have the ability to be set as the correct answer.

-

The first four points can be implemented in a couple of days and will certainly boost community participation overnight. The last one might take a week or two to implement but equally as important.

Then the team can work on making more efficient use of screen real state. Right now it is such a waste of space especially on large monitors which have horizontal aspect vs the vertical aspect of smartphones. A survey is in place here about how many members use smartphones to answer questions (not just to view them). The new platform design clearly favors mobile devices at the expense of desktop users.

My two (actually five :)) cents.

Alexandre
Participant

First, I think this new SCN wastes a lot of screen space as was suggested by other users.

Also too many scrooling!! And in the end of scrooling a paging control?!? Could not be a "Click here to continue scrooling"??

Twice a month I used to access some old SCN pages (about 15 between PO. HANA, Lumira, BI, S&OP, etc.) to know what is happening in these initiaves, and I got what I want at a glance.

With the new SCN.. sorry, but it brings nothing at a glance and even after some searching the results are not good as well.

I believe you have a lot of work to do to make this a good platform again.

Good luck.

PS: no RSS?! Do anyone know how I can follow SCN using feedly now?

Steffi_Warnecke

Hello Alexandre,

yes, currently there is no RSS feed supported by the platform itself. There is an idea for that, but it was set to "Not planned". But there are a lot of interesting comments on it and also a workaround to set up feeds for yourself by Osvaldo. Maybe this can help you in the meantime.

Regards,

Steffi.

You're right about the space - I used to be able to see a lot of information on the screen.

Now I can see 6 articles - this is classic UX dogma nonsense - "the user can't handle more than 7 pieces of information simulateously"

No, you can not. A question only permits one primary tag.

Ps, here in comments the text editor does not allow quote.

This is not particularly helpful. With no indication why search terms are repeated (Tags? Titles? Comments?) what's the purpose of listing them multiple times.

This should be clarified, since the link is actually to Questions and Answers about the "Questions and Answers" (am I not already on the Questions & Answers Page)?

Steffi_Warnecke
Active Contributor
0 Kudos

The first entries should be titles of questions that include your search query for you to check before creating a question of your own with that term as topic. "BODS" appears several times, because several people thought it would make a great subject line for their threads. You can just click on the results one by one to check if they answer your question (that's the purpose of the search result suggestions anyway IMO).

"Search: bods" triggers the search and gets you to the result page.

"Add Question: bods" starts the question creation with "bods" as subject title.

Maybe it would be helpful to include a "Question: + <title>" before the search results that lead to the questions etc to help clear things up. If you think that a good idea, you can put it on the new idea place. 🙂

Regards,

Steffi.

I really like the new UI. And I really like that you may rate answers.

However, there are some things I feel that should be improved:

- My locale is german. Hence, I have a mix of different languages in these communities, such as in my activities stream it says "Aktivitäten" and "Benachrichtigungen". However, everything else seems to be english.

- What are the notifications for? I could not figure out yet what the difference between notifications and activities is.

- I have followed some tags and see that there is information on these tags in my activities stream. I really like this stream. However, from my point of view there is too much information. I do not need to know that certain answers to questions were upvoted or that someone liked a comment. Can I somehow configure this?

- I am missing the e-mail notification and RSS feed abonnement features from the old community. Is there anything like this?

- Whenever I am opening a community I can see a language flag in the upper right corner which seems to vanish, whenever I am somewhere else. Why? Whenever I change it, I go back to the main page of go.sap.com. Why?

- When using the sort by option different numbers of questions can be seen in the "Find Questions & Answers" section.Such as "Hottest" vs. "Updated"

- In the very same dialog a sorting for relevance does not seem to work.

- ...

So from my point of view there are many minor things to fix and improve.

One more thing: In my activities feed there often is the same entry several times, e.g.:

<person A> updated <blog post X> (3 minutes ago)

<person A> updated <blog post X> (5 minutes ago)

<person A> updated <blog post X> (7 minutes ago)

The same applies for example for comments that are changed.

Is it possible to merge these notifications into one entry as long as I have not read it? This would make using the my activities stream a lot easier.

It is horrible. Way too much white space. There is no way to sort search results which seem to be listed in random order or perhaps oldest first which would be the worst choice possible.

Can we have an access to our "Waiting for moderation" messages? And to our Questions in general?

Moreover that's very confusing that we can see in home page that someone answered but, if we open the question, we can't see it (while waiting for moderation I guess)

I would like it better if I could find the questions I have asked or anyhing else for that matter.

I raised a PowerDesigner question yesterday, which I thought hadn't been approved. Looking at my activities, I see that it has been approved, though it's not showing up in the PowerDesigner community. Realistically, that means that no-one will see it, so the question will not get answered. I expect that the average PowerDesigner community member who is feeling helpful will NOT search for questions, they will just look at the latest content on the community.

Currently I get none relating to the PowerBuilder developers so cannot help people. So far it is a backwards step!

Hello David,

email notification is not implemented (yet). There is an idea for it in the Idea Place, so if you want to show your support for it, then please vote accordingsly.

The team already has this on its list either way. Voting will help prioritize this, though.

Regards,

Steffi.

The "comment" vs. "answer" concept is very confusing (and this question is a great example): https://answers.sap.com/articles/32244/what-to-do-about-the-commentanswer-distinction.html
