Time to learn Sybase DBA?

I have experience on Oracle, DB2, SQL. Is now the time to learn Sybase?

When do we expect the release of SAP on Sybase which will be bank-focused?

Thanks for your opinions.

I don't think SAP will use the Sybase ASE (the 'real' database server) as underlying engine for a highly transactional ABAP system, I guess they are much more interested in the mobile databases which are today partially used already in specific scenarios (e. g. Retail Transactionware GM configurator.) I also think they may use the "in-memory databases" to exploit them for Netweaver applications.

The history of the Sybase engine is also pretty interesting since the code base prior to MS SQL 7.0 was shared between Microsoft and Sybase, so you could use the Sybase ODBC drivers to connect to SQL Server databases. Since those drivers were natively available also for Unix system it was possible to connect any Unix (or even VMS) system to an SQL Server running on Windows.

Could you tell me whether a MS SQL DBA can administrate Sybase without any extra training?

Thanks!

Nope - the engine was the same, not the administration tools.

You can download a developer version of Sybase ASE on their website to check it.

Moved to the coffee corner... not a real scenario just yet.
