These are rumours, SAP refused to comment on this but german business magazine Wirtschaftswoche and german IT-Newssite Golem are reporting, SAP is getting rid of Netweaver in BBD due to performance issues. I feel like this may be an opportunity to discuss Netweaver performance in general.
Sources, both german language:

The question is, what will come out of this - a new, more lightweight Web AS?
Request clarification before answering.
Hello,
here is an article about an SAP SaaS Solution that is build on top of a multi tenant Middleware from SAP. SAP has this middleware from a aquired company named "Frictionless Commerce" (i never hear this company name bevor ). Maybe this is also the new platform for byDesign.

It is possible that SAP will use different plattforms for On-Demand and on-Premise solutions.
Best regards,
Patrick

Hello,
I don't think that SDN is the appropriate place for posting rumors and speculation about SAP software. There is no "new" platform for ByDesign and SAP is not getting rid of NetWeaver. These kind of rumors certainly do not help with "Strategic SAP NetWeaver© questions".
When there are facts then we can certainly discuss the strategy and any implications. Doing so before based upon internet and magazine articles is a waste of everyone's time.
Best Regards,
Matt
Hi,
Thanks for this interesting information.
What do they call Netweaver in this context ? the Java stack or the Abap stack ? or both ?
Maybe this info should be better in the Coffee Corner forum ?
Regards,
Olivier

This is SAP's Official Statement:

>As a rule, SAP does not provide detailed information regarding the development costs of individual products or solutions and can in no way validate the number cited by Wirtschaftswoche. SAP NetWeaver continues to be a very important component of the overall SAP product portfolio, including SAP Business ByDesign. We are fully on track with the go-to-market schedule for our on-demand solution for midsize companies. In fact, about 100 so-called charter clients are already managing their entire company with SAP Business ByDesign. The expansion of the market introduction of SAP Business ByDesign is still planned for the first half of 2010. We will provide further details in early 2010
