Not sure that this is the right place to ask but...

When viewing the weblogs, I see the "Permalink" URL. Why is this there? Is it just to get a long-term URL that points to the same content? If so, why is this necessary if the permalink URL is the same as that for the blog's title?

Hi Scott,

It is, we don't have a separate forum for Weblogs.

The permalink is there, as a permanent address for easy linking. It does not matter where the Weblog is in the "Most recent" or "Top weblog" page. You always will find it under the permalink address.

We put the link explicitly on the page, so that it is easy to find/copy and reference. Many people are not familiar with the concept of the permalink yet.

If you are reading a Weblog post, the title is not the permalink anymore. See:/people/dj.adams/blog/2004/05/11/sap-at-jax-2004 You can copy it from the address field of your browser, or from the permalink that we have provided.

Hope that cleared things up, Mark.

Mark,

I read a weblog entry I liked on SDN.

I clicked "permalink."

There was no confirmation message about what I had just done.

And, I don't know how to retrieve what I just "permanlinked."

Please explain.

Hi Kenneth,

I permalink is a the permanent URL address to that Weblog post.

If you are already on that post nothing changes.

The permanent link aka URL of <a href="/people/mark.finnern/blog/2005/12/19/best-of-sdn-in-2005 last Weblog post</a> about Best of SDN is this:

/people/mark.finnern/blog/2005/12/19/best-of-sdn-in-2005

If you want to reference a Weblog in an email, or forum post or in your own Weblog you use that URL/permalink.

Enjoy, Mark.

Mark,

Thanks. I do not mean to be dense but let me see summarize my understanding and let me pose another question.

My understanding: The "permalink" underlined link appears only when you are reading a blog entry in SDN. And, clicking on it does absolutely nothing (as I've confirmed that the URL stays constant).

Another question: If the above is true, why have the "permalink" underlined link. Why not just include "permalink empowered" letting a user know he can just capture the link and then paste it in another document if he wants to get back to it?

Hi Ken,

Well if you check the most recent Weblog page:

https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/weblogs?blog=/weblogs/

There too are permalinks for every story that currently has an abstract there.

or check the Topic link ...

Lot's of good uses for the permalink.

In addition, to just say "permalink empowered" needs two words versus permalink one word plus right mouse click copy possibility. Better functionality in a smaller space if you ask me.

Best, Mark.

P.S. It's great that it is quiet in the office today, so I even get a chance to answer some questions.
