I fear I have to dissapoint you.
- SAPGui is not used on any cash register as far as I know.
- SAP offers a solution with web interface. Usually this interface will be "branded" by the customer, so you'll not see an SAP logo or something which is easy to regognize.
- SAP also bought Triversity, a supplier of cash register software. But even if you see a cash register running Triversity, you can not be sure that there is a SAP backend.
Best advice I have is to read through the reference list - it shows at least some of the customers:

There is actually a POS solution SAP acquired back in the late 2005 called SAP Triversity POS and now is called SAP POS.
I believe there are a few supermarkets that run on this, since the application supports functionality such as scaling, bonus buys, item groupings, and all those fun things that would make a supermarket operations to run smoothly.
Now, it is very hard by just "looking at the screen" or by just "asking the cashier to do this or that" to tell whether or not the supermarket is running on SAP POS since the application is extremelly configurable.
Now, you can try by asking the cashier to enter 499 + once function key. This will trigger Manager Code 499 = EXIT POS and, if the application closes then you'll know they have SAP POS.
Good luck,

You know it, when the Cashier runs some transaction and looks at the monitor with an expression of complete abandon of hope (You can sense that he is looking at one of those ST22 screens)...:P

I usually look at their terminal monitor...If I see a familiar soft blue screen...Then I know it's SAP -;)

Often you cannot see the terminal monitor screen though (particularly in small supermarkets).
Workaround: Ask the cashier what one of those <look around for a product which has not been sold for years - perishables are a good place to start> cost. If the cashier places their mouse cursor somewhere, then enters 4 key-strokes on the keyboard and hits the Enter button... => the screen is most likely soft grey

A couple of big SuperMarkets uses SAP here on Perú...I actually were on of those working in a project...So when I'm buying something and the systems goes down I'm temped to tell the cashier...I can fix it you know? I'm an ABAP Consultant...I don't charge you if you don't charge me -;)

Are you going to boycot supermarkets that don't use SAP?

You can usually tell by looking at the invoice number on the back of the receipt. If it starts with 3.14, it will be a sap application, since it comes preconfigured with that number range. Most store managers would be too lazy to change this setting. Other ranges would hint to other applications like XP or Wii. Output will look like SE38, anything more modern would seem out of place in the average super market.
I hope this completely mystified the problem.
Happy shopping
