I have some years of basis experience. Now I want to become an architect.
1) is this a smart move?
2) and if so, how to achieve?

What is an architect from your point of view ?
Form my point of view it is not a conversion but an evolution.
Experimented SAP admins are, de facto, architects.
Designing SAP technical architectures is a part of the job of a basis admin.
