I got a chance to work as Jr. SAP Basis Admin in my company. I have studied and learnt a lot but I still believe that in emergency situations such system down or database restore etc. I get nervous since I am Jr. I do not get chance to work on these situations. I guess I need advise on how do I improve myself or how I can show to my team members that I am capable to handle such situations.
Please suggest how I make my way to be a successful Basis Admin

Hi
Unless you are prepared to face challenges you cannot learn much.Facing tough situations is an opportunity to learn and also to prove ourselves.
1. Always maintain good relations with the senior consultants
2. Never forget the importance of maintaining social networking especially with people from your technology/module
2. Try to involve and observe when other consultants are working on different issues.
3. Whenever you are happened to face a tough situation, consult and take the advise of your senior people before taking any action.
4. Learn more and more from the documentation available and SAP Library
5. Regularly go through the SDN Forums
Wish you all the best
Thanks,
Ravi

Trouble shooting and exploring the new things is also a good way to learn somehting, First of all you should always be ready to learn and explore the possibility, of course you cant do the same into your running system, may be you can do some work into your IDES, but you can download the minisap version it is perfect for learning BASIS, and you can explore all the task which is required dor a BASIS admin.
Another important point is you should know from where and how can you find a solution of any problem if you know this then you can solve your problem easily, its my personal experience, for this i would like to say
1. sdn.sap.com
2.service.sap.com--> notes
3.Help.sap.com
these are enough to sort out any problems which is new for you.

Subhash

Glad to hear someone is sensible enough to be preventive an not reactive!... That attitude will take you a long way!
The key for success is reading!... you can see that theres lots of people posting in the forum that are having basic technical issues... read as many threads as you can and understand the resolutions... if you have any questions ask. Also I can tell you that is a fact that 99% of the problems can be easily solved by reading the logs and traces... learn were the logs are and how to use the logs and traces in your advantage and you will have half the battle won.
Thats my 2 cents.
Regards
Juan

Have you considered downloading and installing MiniSAP? It's great to play with and gives you an environment where you can experiment without worrying too much about the consequences....

Bill,
The fact you are asking is a good start. The biggest risk you face in BASIS is that of not expecting the unexpected.
(or perhaps unexpecting the expected). As you keep asking and retesting yourself you are at least on the right track.
Keep it up.
Gareth

One way of doing it would be to create an emergency of your own while the Snr's. are out of office. There are a few obscure reports you could run, which will cause absolute havok!
(just joking)
My suggestion: Keep alert for novel things in the company which are really usefull and show your understanding of the system and how your company uses it (or might be able to use it more usefully). It might take some time, but you will win respect and recognition.
Cheers,
Julius
