Double Messaging?

We currently have Direct Messaging similar to the current DM option within the https://people.sap.com site where you can 'Send a Message".  This triggers a generic email to the recipient from SAP Universal Profile (notification@sapnetworkmail.com), and includes a subject line prefix:  [Direct Message]

We also have https://messages.sap.com as part of the beta, using SAP Relay which is more of a Skype emulating group chat.  Why wouldn't we have both concepts integrated into a single messaging strategy?  When I am in https://blogs.sap.com and use my avatar popup window and select "Send a Direct Message" it reroutes me to messages.sap.com.

Send a Message and Send a Direct Message are quite confusing and in a sense competitive?  They are both using similar terms and concepts.

I don't see any visible notifications that someone sent me a chat in the messages.sap.com UI, unless I am physically on the web page itself and then of course the response will appear.  I also have seen a blue circle in the list on the left, but in both cases require me to have the browser window open.

If someone wants to really have a 'chat' style conversation with me, I doubt it will come in a 'live' interactive format shown in messages.sap.com, and will be much more asynchronous, so without visible notifications in my profile header (SAP Jam uses a red bell icon and doesn't require me to drill into my avatar) I personally would prefer email with the link back into a messaging interface (and of course I would expect it to log me in automatically and not require me to press the ghost icon in the header).

Special thanks to my cube neighbor who was helping me test some of the back and forth features (or confirming the ones that are lacking).

Hi Jeremy, is the blue circle you refer to a notification indicator within the chat itself or is it something else? I realize you want the notifications to appear in the header, I agree this makes sense, and I will add this to

Hi Bill - the blue circle with a number in the middle appeared in the 'My Chats' list just to the left of the timestamp.  I've seen 1, 2, etc. but the number itself is not centered and gets a little truncated in IE 11 (haven't tried Chrome).

This blue indicator seems to be there momentarily and disappears - seemingly whether you've read the chat or not, or even selected the item in the my chats list.

Hi Jeremy,

we are fully aware of the inconsistency with messaging currently. SAP Messages only came late in, so we sticked with the email approach for the beta launch that was already implemented in People. We want to implement a couple of UX improvements in Messages and need an urgent stability fix, before we will connect People with Messages.

But of course SAP Messages is the unified messaging solution, and it will be fully integrated into Notifications, even in the header.

Thanks for trying beta!

Best,

  Oliver

Thank you Oliver - it would appear that someone changed my helpful answer reply to correct answer, but I have put it back (seemingly my right as the author of this post).  I don't want this to fall off the radar as answered or completed, simply because we have guidance on the longer term plans.  I still see this as a deficiency and uncompleted aspect of the future SCN, so that is what led me to 'helpful' as opposed to 'correct'.

Hello Jeremy,

That would be me:) Whenever the SCN topic expert attends a member's discussion and the issue is being taken care of (added to the bugs/feedback list, scheduled to be resolved in next sprint etc.) I mark it as correct so I have easier monitoring on what wasn't attended yet. It doesn't mean the issue was resolved but it means it's on our radar and won't be forgotten.

As Oliver mentioned "But of course SAP Messages is the unified messaging solution, and it will be fully integrated into Notifications, even in the header." I believe no further action is required.

Thank you,

Moshe
