Do you feel like helping those who don't help anyone?

I have a confession to make: sometimes if the person asking a question has been on SDN for years, has hundreds of posts but 0 points, I just don't feel like replying. It could be that this person actually helped a lot of other SDNers, but they were ungrateful and didn't assign any points, but I think that most likely this person only goes to SDN to ask his/her question and hasn't bothered at all to help others. So why spend any time helping this SDN "vampire"?

Am I the only one thinking like that? Is it wrong?

You're right on track. In the end you decide what you want to answer, for whatever reasons.

I feel similar reluctance like you and Rainer (and many others I presume) towards answering certain type of questions.

Right now I have not much time to answer any questions, but that's a different story.

Cheers

Thomas

Raja and Julius, thank you for the compliments! You just made my day.

Yes, it's a good point. Thank you.

I do not answer if

- the question can be solved by typing in a keyword and pressing F1 to read the online help

- the questions is a basic one where it is clear that the poster is new to abap and never had education or read a book about abap

- i have the impression that the poster is just too lazy to dig in into the problem and did not search although the search in SDN is sometimes awful, having a lots of answers which have nothing to do with the problem

I understand the feeling. Maybe you can use the quality and re-usability of the question and your answer as a second benchmark. Questions and answers show up in search results for those who are willing to put in some effort....

Yes, this is definately a better gage than the ponits.

A nice example is David Halitsky who asks a lot of challenging questions and puts a lot back into SDN by arguing with all and sundry who answer

Lets see whether he is still reading the Coffee Corner...

Julius,

Funny part is I have been worndering about where David has been lately. I miss the all the fun arguments, plus I always end up learning something new from these or further my understanding.

Take care,

Stephen

He made a post here a few months back about heading off on a non-SAP related project and would therefore be leaving SDN.

Subsequently he asked a few tricky questions down in ABAP General still, but not for a while now as far as I remember.

Cheers,

Julius

Agreed with you jelena, Some guys don't even bother to give the feedback after solving their queries. But one more thing, you

please do posting as most of the times i consider your answers as benchmark...

Thanks,

Raja

Yes, I normally do a bit of a background check on folks before I answer.

You don't need moderator access to do this; only to reject the post if they have still not learnt to use the search or expect others to do their work for them...

That is why Abuse Reports are great as well, and you are one of my favourite SDN'ers who's reports can always be relied upon.

In special cases we investigate further when folks are using one account to ask questions and another to answer. This is not only limited to both being within the same thread which is the obvious (and very stupid) option...

9 times out of 10 they loose everything for sufficient reasons.

My 2 cents,

Julius
