Creativity in IT

Is it possible to apply your creativity in IT? I am a creative person, having won a prize in creative writing. I do not feel that I am using my creative abilities in my job.

IT is mostly about analytical abilities.

What is your opinion?

That would depend on what IT area you intend to go into.

As an analogy, if you want to build a new house, you would want to hire a creative architect to design it, but would you really want to hire a creative contractor to build it?

I am implementing Business Intelligence solutions. Usually I am given the requirements and then implement the solution. I guess that I am like the contractor who has to build the house. I would say that the amount of creativity is very limited.

What kind of IT jobs require a lot of creativity? I am thinking that marketing of IT solutions would be a creative job.

Hi,

I think that finding new solutions for new projects involves a lot of creativity.

The solution is not often pre-cooked in the book...

Finding the cause for problems requires a lot of analytical skills. For solving them creativity definately comes into play. I'm a creative person myself and find IT much more satisfying than I'd ever imagine.
