Complaints about e-mail notification on SCN blogs etc.

Hi there,

Recently I asked my colleagues to follow certain SCN pages in order to keep them updated if there are changes and to check if the changes are correct.

Problem: Everybody gets a long e-mail, with all the sites content (in a not so perfect format!) but there is no hint at all which information was added or deleted. So some people complained to me asking what's the sense of subscribing if they cannot see what's new?

They unsubscribe because the Mails are a) useless and b) the format is not good.

They would have to go on the actual SCN page to see it in a nice format and then start to compare versions.

Why can't it be like the delta e-mails for SCN Wikis where everything that was deleted is red/strike-through and everything new is green:

Is there a chance that this can be changed in the future?

Best regards

Steffi

This isn't an available feature on SCN, though it would be nice.

One feature you should be aware of is that documents have versioning.  At the top right you'll find a link to "Version #": if you click that, you'll get to a window comparing the current and previous version with the changes highlighted. Try it on

Cool, thank you - the "Version" view shows exactly what I want!

If it is already perfectly available - why isn't it sent by mail?

I submitted it at SCN Innovation and Enhancements, as you suggested:

Thanks to anybody who rates the idea UP 🙂

The Version feature fails to work on large documents, where it is most needed.

The error message says "The document body was too large to do a version comparison"

Yes, this used to be more widespread but now only appears occasionally when documents have a wide table or image...it's not perfect but works for most.

A poll can be taken to see how many actual users of this feature are satisfied with it.

It hasn't worked 10 out of 10 times for me.

If a small document is modified, i don't bother to look into version history.

For a relatively popular large document's modification, I tend to see using version history if a whole new section is added by OP. Naturally that error comes, and I end up using Notepad++ to compare the text of both versions.

So far I cannot make out when the version feature works and when it doesn't...

Here I have a tables that incl. graphics and text and it does NOT work:

And here is a table with text only and it DOES work:

For these pages with only text and pictures (no table) it DOES work:

But here is a page with only text and pictures (no table) that does NOT work:
