It's ok that there is a limit on open questions that you can ask but now I'm forced to close down questions by giving them the status answered while they are not answered at all.
is it not better to have a button 'not answered and give up any hope for an answer' or something like that ?
it would also make the search on sdn better if you knew if the the status of the question is answered or not wouldn't it ??
I found it very strange to mark questions as answered and give the impressions to my fellow sdn members that I was very happy with the answers received or without any answer received in some cases
kind regards

Request clarification before answering.
I dont think all people are closing the threads as there is a limitation
of max 10 open questions.some people open new user id instead of closing old questions.
For example you can see this user who crossed 10 open
questions started asking with his new user id in this thread.
I congratulate SAP about that fact the 2 zillion user mark has been reached. Or something like that...

I am sorry for that, you´re right. I vote for the new way of closing threads. We want to have the "not answered" option!!

I am very thankfull for this max 10 open question rule because it reminds people to close their threads (that is a much bigger problem!), is a show stopper for people who load 100+ interview questions into the forums from some catalogue they have (this was a big problem in the past) and also stops the occasional spammer who gets through.
Does your discomfort outweigh those advantages?
I am also stopped every now and again from posting a question because of it and have to date always found sufficient questions I have neglected which can be closed.
Cheers,
Julius
Hi Julius,
You make good points but so does Arthur...
When you're digging for a solution & your timelines are tight, the first thing you check for is whether the question is answered or not. If the post is marked an unanswered you move swiftly along...
So the common ground Arthur is suggesting sounds more useful and it could cater for both sides of the coin, i.e. stop abusers & spammers while speeding up problem resolution at the client side with business breathing down your neck
Another suggestion from my side would be if a method could be devised to identify people that cross-post & people that receive help on the forums & don't award points accordingly. SDN should institute a fine system where points are deducted from those individuals

no, it doesn't outweigh the discomfort, and it is good that you have to close threads before you can ask a new question.
but I have a problem with the fact that when I want to close a thread where no or no suitable answer is given that I still have to mark it 'answered' the only way to close a thread is to mark it 'answered' while no answer came ? doesn't that sound strange to you at least a bit ?
now sdn has 2 statuses, unanswered (status open) or answered status (closed)
as if every closed question is always answered ?
my sugestion is to make a status 'not answered' (closed)
(sdn can also run nice statistics on how many questions are really answered or not in that case)
now the statistics about answered questions will be closely related to the famous quote
'There are Lies, bigger Lies and Statistics'

You can already do that via "answered" questions without full points. The sorting of the search results also takes this into consideration.
Deletion of old questions has been discussed before. Manually, it is not worth the effort. Automatically is too risky. At least that was my understanding of the outcome.

You are right I agree. But yes that liberty was misused by some ppl.
May be ppl of SDN got to think of a better solution for it instead of forcing the ppl to mark the thread as answered.
I think SDN can allow that light green (close) star (I think moderators get this option, not very sure) option to everyone saying the answer is not completely solved or not solved at all.
P.S : SDN is not only used for posting new question and solving it, its indeed used to find already solved questions too.Doesn't make sense to mark all answered.

hi,
If this kind of restriction is not there ,then there are some people who keeps on asking same questions many number of times without closing the old ones.
So this will restrict them to certain extent.

I can understand the why of the rule but in my case I also want to close the old ones but I find it strange to give it the label 'Answered' most of the times there came no answer at all. guess my questions are to difficult or totaly no sollution available. If after a few weeks or in some cases months there is no answer why bother to keep it open ?
suppose I look for threads on sdn , I find someone who asked the same question for instance last year and to my delightfullness I see on top of the thread a big green star with the label 'Answered'
then I look further and I see the question is not answered at all ? kind of confusing isn't it ?
perhaps a suggestion to mark questions with
RED star 'No answer at all or usable answers'
YELLOW star 'heplful answers but no total sollution'
when closing down the question .
I think it will also help in the search for answers if you know on top of the thread if you can expect something that can really help you.
kind regards

There r two ways to mark a question as answered either u directly mark it as answered or u award 10 pts to somebody to show that the thread is now answered. So when u choose the first option of marking the thread as answered pople know tht thje thread is not useful and when u choose the second method then ppl know that the thread is useful.

I don't get you're point. when I look or search for question I see only that the questions are answered or not. I don't see how many points are given so whether it was usefull or not. wouldn't it be nice to see before opening a thread whether it was usefull or not for the one who asked the question ??
when you open one of my old question you see a very big star above that it is answered ? you have to waste needless time to figure out it wasn't answered at all and or completly useless ?
wouldn't it be more easy just to make a red cross with 'no usefull answer' as an option (and now closed due to limit of open questions)
kind regards
arthur
