Bug? Safari keeps randomly asking for a certificate

Using up to date Safari on the latest OSX, SCN keeps randomly asking me to choose which one of my rather limited collection of one certificates I'd like to use.

It's really annoying, happens on maybe 1 in 10 new pages (questions, blogs, searches, etc.) that I visit.

I am logged in. Have completely cleared the Safari cookie and history cache, and removed all relevant certificates from my keychain to let it generate a new one. Still it keeps asking...

It's the randomness that smells like a bug to me. Also I tend to accumulate a steady stream of "Identity preference" entries in my keychain, one for each time it decides to ask me.
