Blogging and Point system in SCN

Hi Guys,

I am kicking of this discusion just out of curiosity. Please correct me if any of my understanding is wrong.

I have observed that the point system has been changed in SCN (Initially it was 10(solved) 6(Very helpfull) and 2(Helpfull)) to 10(Solved) and 5(helpfull). is their any specific reason for this change?

I also wanted to know about blogging in SCN, does anyone who post's a blog is visible to all users (does anyone approve before its available to All?)and what about the point system in Blogs? has it been changed aswell?

We have a Contributor Reputation Program FAQ document that explains the background.

Regarding blog points it states the following:

• 10 points
• Additional feedback points as the community likes, shares, or rates the content

Hi Prasad,

We had some of the same concerns about quality in the new system.  Actually, we believe that quality will improve.  I am working on a blog about this topic and will publish by tomorrow, but here is the summary preview:

In the new SCN, members have the opportunity to determine the value of content.  They can give blogs, 5 stars or 4 stars, which will generate points for the author.  They can share the content with others if they think that it is really good.  They can also like the content.  These are indicators of valuable content and the impact is that the author gets points, and the content becomes more relevant in search when it has more points. In essence, content that is not valued will fall to the bottom of the search pile.

If members see content that is abusive, they can report it with one click, and the moderators will be notified.  If members see content that is poor quality, they can rate it 1, 2, or 3 stars, which get not points.  You can also provide critique in a comment without giving points.

We decreased the focus on points for quantity of posts, and increased the focus on points for quality and value, as determined by the readers.

Moderators are still out there doing spot checks, but members need to help by elevating good content, and reporting abuse.

But does it not reduce the quality? i mean what if a person posting the blog has some incorrect information which will be available to all the users?

How will this be taken care of?

I Would personally suggest a review system to be in place before a blog is made available to other users.

Hi Prasad,

The thinking is the following: The community will give the low quality posts low ratings and will also set the record straight via comments if the information is not accurate.

You don't want low rated posts in your profile for the world to see and that hopefully nudges you into better quality posts.
