I just got a mail from someone asking for consulting help promising to pay $100/hr. mail below.

Dear Gurus,

got most emails from SDN forums

Who can provide immediate SAP BI BW support by email (in the next 15 to 30 min)

I can pay $100/hr for good help!

I am in the USA central time, sorry no west coast, is 2 hrs behind ;(

You will surprised by some of the people on the mailing list - Gary Nolan is one of them. I only know him from his books on BI.

But he did not only send this mail to you and will in the long run tend toward the cheapest help, particularly if he cannot even evaluate between guru problem solving skills and someone who has only read the manual...

( of course reading the manual is also very important, but it is a basic skill )

I would be very carefull of such a mail.

If the person is well known to you (e.g. you know them as well from SDN) then it would be different, I agree.

I got plenty of emails, none of them was offering any money. People ask for FREE help. If you would search my questions, you would find one called something like "free instant email consulting" where I asked others about this experience. Julius was the first one who commented on the thread, I believe:))

Well, I was offered job like twice, one would be cool if I would be a contractor (and not employed) or if I would not be such coward:)) Second was totally off, just a blind date asked by the recruiter who was talking a lot offering nothing more than a "attractive job" with "great salary" (1000 miles relocation required:)))). Nothing worth the time...

Well, that was a little off topic, but I though it could be relevant... My contributions didn´t bring any "special offer":))

To finish this: I am glad you posted this thread to let us (me) know... It is nice that people come back with some relevant feedback. I would never dare to spam a single email asking the question myself. In past only thread with my name in the subject were posted in Adobe forms forum (where you can find me regularly... just in case anybody of you, friends, would need some help regarding AIF) and was asking for "IMMEDIATE HELP - come everybody, Ott help!" and stuff like this:))

It depends. If I know the person or the company then I will help them.

But... they have to solve the root cause problem for standard problems in most cases themselves, otherwise you can perpetually milk them. In the long run that is not profitable and you have to work long days. Some take the bait.

Clever work with gemstones is much cheaper in the long run than lots of bla bla bla when you are tired...
