About basic questions in the ABAP forums

You better change the forum name to be "UI Programming for Experienced Programmer" or "Burbank Kingdom" if basic gui programming related questions are not acceptable here. You have to understand people will come to this forum if they have questions regarding selection-screen or alv if the forum name is called "UI Programming" whether or not the questions are BASIC. And people who are willing to help new learners in this field will come to this forum too.

I really understand your frustration on not getting correct answer to your questions. This is beacuse once I had the same problem. I posted my very first question here and although many great-minded people truely wanted to help me, I stayed unsatisfied with either their tips or didn't correctly get their answers.

Although it was really hard to get this simple issue solved I was extremely proud of myself when I finaly found it w/o one's help. Eventually it was somewhere in the doc. which came with the software but I was too lazy to look there in first row. After not getting what I expected, my stubborness pushed me to get the answer myself. A feeling not to forget.

Hope the message is clear.

Regards

Marcin

PS: I lied. That was my second question followed by , to be precise;)

Yes, I guess it is a product feature that there is a huge grey-zone...

However repeated questions without effort and repeated answers focusing on folks not using the search (symptom = linkfarming and ponits begging) create more noise than information value.

I have often been tempted to ask questions in ABAP forums when it does not work as expected (this is the case with most of my programs), but after a more refined search or just reading the F1 docs it does work out and I know why.

I do agree with you that there are tricky beginner questions which have a high "discussion value" to them, but this is dependent on the person asking the question.

I generally first do a plausibility check and cross-posting check via the profile overview. Try it and you will see that it makes sense.

If sdn.sap.com where a personal training substitute for folks who do not search or invest in basic training then we would be flooded with noise, as we often are. That is why threads are moved to the Test&Playground forum and the option to prioritize threads is worth looking into (copyright Prateek).

Cheers,

Julius

I suppose you are referring to and .

It would have helped your case if you had referred to these yourself instead of making us try to figure out what your problem is.

To try to answer your question(?)

When you come to the forums you are asked "Want to post to the expert forums?" The forums are meant to be for users with a good understanding of what they are trying to do but are stuck on a particular problem. They are not meant to be a substitute for proper training and experience. They are not meant to be a place where rather than searching for an answer, you simply toss something out into cyberspace and expect your problems to be solved.

There is some history here. Basic questions were very common up until a couple of years ago. But many knowledgeable people started to leave the forum because there were so many repeated questions and questions that showed a basic lack of understanding of what the questioner was trying to do and questions that were simply lazy. The powers that be decided to apply more stricter moderation to the forums and not allow basic questions.

So basic questions are not allowed. However, there are resources that anyone can use to get basic questions answered. SAP offers training; there are all sorts of SAP related books; there are other user groups where basic questions are allowed.

I hope this helps.

Whatever Rob did, I'm sure it was justified. Keep in mind that this isn't a training site for newbies. You are expected to do your own research, including searching for FAQ's and reading the help files and other documentation first. We 'experts' were all newbies once, BUT some of us actually made an effort to solve our own issues first through diligent research before posting. The help files and PDF's available these days are far better than they were 15 years ago; I'd suggest you try using them. Also, keep in mind that there are folks who make their living as consultants in SAP and then there are folks that pose as consultants and try to get their work done for them by posting basic questions here...
