Work area external numbering

Dear All

I am facing problem while creating work area, in SAP EHS- IHS.

Workarea key is too small 20 chars, Is there any alternative formaking it 40 chars,

also like functional location in SAP PM can it have predefined structure indicator, as below

20 chars (40 chars is better)

xx-xxx-xxxx-xxx-nnnn

first 2 digits - sectional area in a factory , like SM smelter, CH - cast house

next 3 digits - sub section

next 4 digits - production line

next 3 digits - sub section in production line

last 4 digits - actual work area key

CH-ABC-WXYZ-PQR-0001

also with such kind of numbering, hierrachy can be established, asin functional location in SAP PM.

even no of reports related to all incidents in CH-ABC can be searched by enetring CH-ABC* in CBIH82

this can be done manually, but later on while cretaing new work area, more care is to be taken for external numbering, what i feel why SAP is not modifying it, as such it is not big thing for them, as same is already avilable in SAP PM.

team kindly suggest your views, or any other work around to do this.

Hello Mandar,

It is not straight forward task to change the number ranges. You can create a new number range object but there will be lot of dependencies in terms of Data Structure, Table controls and Screen size etc. Further if you change the number ranges and in future wish to upgrade to higher version and if the version has less size, you need to redo all the work.

My suggestion would be to take single digits for allocation and try to restrict the assignment
