Can anybody help with this question? Thanks!

Hi Christy,
That is a pretty wide open question. A Basis person can do any of the stuff a non-Basis person can do, but probably understands the SAP side a bit better.
In version 12.0 and higher, there is a lot of NetWeaver functionality which, in some organizations, falls under Basis responsibilities. There are message listeners (IDOCs) which require the setup of RFC Destinations in SAP. I think that also falls under Basis roles. If you are involved in security, you would probably also have to set up the IDs for remote access by xMII for exercising BAPI and RFC calls.
There are few recent postings which have links to basic explanations of what SAP-MII (formerly xMII) can do and where it is best utilized. Here are some good links:

These two will get you a basic view. When you run into specific questions, ask them. There are always people here willing to help. I would also do a search on Basis related key words, but searching on "Basis" itself probably won't get you very far.
Good luck,
Mike

12.0 -- Administer it.
11.5 -- One would not need any BASIS skills.
