Hello experts,
Can any one shed some light on what are Specification Symbols,Parameter Symbols and Descriptor Symbols in Report template creation(CG42) and how they are used.? Well appreciated if any give explation with some real time examples...!!
Request clarification before answering.
Hi Prakash,
Specification Symbol: : Symbols of symbol type Specification to insert the following data from the SAP specification management component:
· Characteristic value
· Graphic, phrase, or code of a phrase-enabled characteristic
· Value of a table field for the SAP component Recipe Management
These Symbols are used to fetch the data from EH&S Sepcificaiton Workbench.
Example: Data like Chemical Properties of Substance viz Density, Boiling Point, Viscosity, temprature etc...
Parameter Symbol: Symbols of the symbol type Parameter are used in report templates as placeholders for data that does not originate from the specification database.
Example: Material master data, such as material name or Data for the generation variant, such as the rating
Descriptor Symbols: Symbols of symbol type Descriptor refer to phrase texts and phrase-related fields (phrase codes, graphics, and so on) of the SAP phrase management component. You use this symbol type to insert language-independent, standardized text modules into your document template.
Example: 3 or 5 Pictograms / Hazardous Symbols in GHS Labels etc...

Hi Prakash,
I did test at my end and results are fine. I am able to pull the value of "VOC in g/l" from specificaiton workbench.
The code you have copied seems not to be correct.
Correct code is as follows,
<11BRG011(M,SAP_EHS_1023_041;*)>
<01G1023041VG[D:VOC in g/l]>
<11ERG011>
Also, make sure that, the Validity area of the Specificaiton and the validity area of the Generation Varient are matching.
Note: WWI server should be up and running.
Please let me know, still facing any issues.
Regards
Amol

Hi Prakash,
Descriptors are normally phrases that you use as chapter titles (fixed texts in the template). For example, "Toxicological information", "Handling and storage" in an MSDS. You need to create phrases first on CG12, in order to be able to use them in CG42. You can select whether to output the text, id, code, graphic, etc of the phrase.
Spec. Symbols are placeholders for the real values of the properties of your specifications. When you generate the report for a spec, these symbols will be replaced by the real values. Sometimes you need repeating groups in order to extract the information. All symbols are available in the symbol tree in the WWI wizard. You have the possibilitiy to change the symbol tree (you can choose from your configured property trees).
Parameter symbols are normally data coming from other "parts" of the system (not from specs) - it can be material data from the material master, customer info, data related to waste management, etc.
Hope it helps,
Irene
