Secure FTP in MII 12.2

I am looking for the possibility of MII making secure FTP communication over WAN with a MES system. Possible option is to use SAP PI for the SFTP piece between MII & MES but it looks a overhead, any ideas ?

develop custom action for sftp.

Use sftp component in custom action.
