SAP and SDS management

How can we manage our SDS in SAP? Do we need to have the EHS or EHSM module? or is the a module within EHS that will do it? If we don't have the EHS module, can we purchase just the part of the EHS module that will do the SDS management? We are currently paying a separate company to manage our SDS but will be moving to everything being on SAP so it would make sense to try to get the SDS into SAP now if we can. Any advice/guidance now would be helpful and appreciated.

Hi Amy,

I believe even if you just want to upload finished SDS to SAP and have SAP send them out to your customers automatically you would need to purchase an SAP EHS/EHSM license.

Let me know if you would like to talk to an SAP expert from the Sustainability team (responsible for EHS/EHSM aka. Product Compliance) who will be able to answer the licensing questions - as this tends to be quite complex.

Alternatively, I would recommend reaching out to the SAP Account Executive responsible for your company.

Best

Hello

further add ons to your questions and doubts:

Regarding: or is the a module within EHS that will do it? => the answer depends to the question: will you use a WWI report yes or no (please refer to the "Blog" as listed. You will find many similar questions here

regarding: If we don't have the EHS module, can we purchase just the part of the EHS module that will do the SDS management? => you can acquire only a "full" EHS license (according to my knowledge). There is no option available to acquire subproducts of EHS only. GET IN TOUCH WITH SAP: The license topic can not be clarified here. It is a "to complex story" (including the EHSM component).

Regarding: We are currently paying a separate company to manage our SDS but will be moving to everything being on SAP so it would make sense to try to get the SDS into SAP now if we can. Any advice/guidance now would be helpful and appreciated.

=> keep in mind: to handle a "SDS" you need "content" (data); therefore: to use EHS as a solution option this makes only sense (from my point of view) if you consider products of Verisk on the top. If you are not willing to buy Versik products/services then you have to do the FULL job on your own. And this can only be done if you have all " the experts in your company.

So the questions might be: which service are you buying from this company? and can this company can support the "SAP EHS" process as well?

Hello

Let us do it simple: we have the module SAP SD (in SAP ERP system) and the module SAP MM (as well part of an SAP ERP system).

Now in SAP SD you use a material number in combination with other data to work on the process. In most cases: The need to ship a SDS is directly related to the SAP SD process.

Now you could think of a process to handle that with out using SAP EHS (more or less manually). But in most cases you will use SAP EHS.

In SAP EHS you have two options: you can use the SDS as a "pdf" file to send to the customer and you can use the "core" EHS data to generate a WWI related SDS and then to ship this SDS to the customer.

The "license" story of EHS/EHSM is to complex to discuss. But reading between the line: you do not have a license and therefore. you should get in touch with your SAP account partner.

The big question is now: which process is the best for you?

That means work on "pdf" SDS files outside of SAP and use them in SAP for dispatching or to use the "WWI" approach? If the later is true: you need data in SAP EHS. And that would be the next challenge for you. Here in most cases you will need "Verisk" (partner of SAP) add on software components to manage the data etc.

Overall: it is a good idea to start reading this document:

https://blogs.sap.com/2013/05/07/sap-ehs-management-for-beginners/

to understand (or to get an idea about) the "EHS" options (and challenges). If you have no SAP EHS experience in your company: you will not be successfull to do the set up without a external consulting partner (and you will find many companies outside who are willing to help you to build an EHS system).

BUt if you would like to use SAP EHS then you should activate the "dangerous goods process" as well and the "Label management" process on top. Only using SAP EHS for SDS handling is from my point of view not "good" enough (it is a matter of how many money you would like to invest in comparison to the benefit you will gain)
