Dear Experts,
We had some MSDS generation failures the other evening and in looking at the log, it looks like the material had a problem finding the specification attached to the materials.
The specific question I have is "If on the Basic Data 2 tab of MM03, if the basic material is filled in, does this material override the material number for use in trying to find the MSDS specification?".
Reason for asking is that the error log seems to be referencing the value stored in the basic material field.
Any positive progress on a solution would be appreciated.

Steve

Hello all
1.) you decribe a problem in dispatching a MSDS to the customer (Final end report generation)
2.) depending on SAP release you are using SAP allows to create the link between MM and EH&S only in EH&s and in a higher SAP Release you can create the link in MM to a REAL_SUB too
3) Please check first the following:
a.) using one of your material numbers are you able to find the REAL_SUB in Modul EH&S PS (e.g. using specification management system) => that means: which material number are linked to the REAL_SUB in reality in table ESTMJ
b.) please check the report request table in EH&S (CVDHH Ii believe; but I am not sure). Here you will find two MM related fields. One is called "rawmaterial number" and the other one "material number". I am sorry to say that i I have no idea about how both fields are filled by SAP standard and how they are used exactly but it could be that rawmaterial is filled using the field "basic material" and the other field uses the material number linked in EH&S
Take a look in SAP Service Marketplace. There is a SAP OSS note available descibing very well the report delivery process of EH&S (this SAP Note is only a documentation). I assume that this topic shouöd be inside this OSS note.
May be this helps a little bit
With best regards
CB

PPS: Actually I can not remember exactly the fields in structur: RCGCUSDATA and RCGSDDOC (that means if there is a field rawmaterial available or not) which are used in the collaboration of SAP Modul SD and EH&S. Both are the "key" input data to detect the specification (REAL_SUB) in EH&S. If the REAL_SUb is found than EH&S is trying to find a suitable release report to be shipped to the customer. But this is a different story.
But taking into account documentation (refer above) this is documented:
"Material-specification assignment check
In EH&S, the specifications of which the material consists are determined using the material-specification assignment."
So main issue seems to be MARA/ESTMJ to find the correct REAL_SUB.

I created the material using MM01 in a script, no referenence of other materials.
Here is the message that I see in transaction DGSD right before the failure messages:
The raw material number DYLON0-0AE-500LB0D was determined for material number 000000065250200040
The FERT 65250200040 has the value DYLON - AE-500LB D in the basic material of the basic data 2 tab.
I was wondering if the MSDS send process typically uses the basic material to try to find the MSDS specification?

Hi Steven,
I don't think that specifying the "basic material" should overwrite the material-substance assignments.
Can you please tell that the for substance in question here, how exactly you created it?
Did you reference it with another substance or inherited it?
Because in case of referencing, the material assignments are not copied.
