Query regarding xRPM component and cProject

Hi Experts,

I hope someone can answer this query of mine. SAP xRPM/cProjects/cFolders 4.00 has already been implemented a year back for a client. The xRPM component has not been implemented ( probably there was no such requirement )

How would you expect cProject to behave in this case ? What happens is xRPM has not been implemented ??

You inputs would really help and give some direction.

Thanks,

RB

Hi Rajeshree

cProjects component can be used independently of SAP RPM component.

If you want the iformation at the portfolio level, then SAP RPM component can be used. Note that SAP RPM component can be accessed only through portal.

Hi Amit,

Thanks for your reply... so basically cProjects without xRPM component behaves like a task management tool.

If you want the information at the portfolio level - Please can you explain this statement and what exactly is portfolio ?

Also, what is the value addition for an user to enter all the project related information in the cProject, task and phase level ? Is it just for the purpose of churning out various reports in that case - like workload for an user, projects currently being handled, projects closed and so on..

It would be great to get views on these points.

Thanks,

Hi,

cProjects is a project management tool. For example, you have a project that needs 4 people and take 20 days to complete. You have divided the project into 8 tasks, with each person requiring to complete 2 of the tasks. There are dependencies between some of the tasks, etc. Basically, anything that you can understand as a project (in the IT sense) can be managed with cProjects.

xRPM on the other hand is a portfolio management tool. So, you decide to create a new product in your company. For example, lets say your company manufactures soaps and you have decided to make shampoos henceforth. So it is a new portfolio for your company. You allot budget to it, you track the progress of the portfolio, you monitor from an overhead view. But you don't manage it like a project, i.e. you don't see who is working on what, whether someone is responsible for mixing the chemicals, someone is responsible for bottling the shampoo etc. You only see that the product has been conceptualized, you have spent xxxx amount setting up the plant, and you can make estimates such as, if you sell each bottle for x amount, then based on the plant that you have set up, you can make xx profit yearly.

Basically xRPM is used for all portfolio level decisions and monitoring. xRPM internally can use cProjects to bring in a level of project management. A portfolio manager will usually have project managers under him to execute the projects whereas the portfolio manager will oversee the portfolio.

Hope this helps,

Best Regards,
